the superior court of california, county of san francisco, invites applications from spanish/english interpreters certified by the state of california who are willing to work for the san francisco superior court on a permanent, full-time basis. Work is performed in an office and courtroom environment involving continuous contact with judges, staff, attorneys, litigants, community groups, and the general public.
this selection process is being conducted in accordance with san francisco superior court personnel rule 4. An eligibility list will not be established.
final filing date: continuous, applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis.
compensation: $3,209.86 - $3,901.25 biweekly ($83,456 - $101,432 annually)*
- current applicable labor contract provides an additional 3% increase in base salary effective 12/10/24.

examples of duties position overviewemployees serving in this position interpret from and into spanish and english using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and for other court-related departments at the direction of the court; make sight translations for the benefit of the court of documents including, but not limited to, court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents; interpret for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments at the direction of the court;
interpret between languages in court proceedings; bring to the court's attention any items that may impede the interpreters’ performance; research and understand legal terminology used in court and functions of the court; receive daily calendar assignments from the san francisco court interpreter supervisor and accurately complete daily activity logs, or other documentation as required; and perform other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing sight translation of short documents.
requirements
sit for extended periods; frequently stand for extended periods and frequently walk, bend, stoop, lift, and stretch; manual dexterity and eye‑hand coordination as required for the specific language used; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication, litigants and the public; use of office equipment as required by the assignment.
qualifications required qualifications- all applicants must possess a valid certificate as a "certified court interpreter" issued by the judicial council of california on behalf of the state of california. Information on how to become certified can be obtained at:
- one year of the equivalent of full‑time experience acting as an interpreter‑translator in a courtroom or in a business environment.
- legal terminology and functions used in court.
- correct usage of grammar, spelling and punctuation of english and spanish.
- interpreter ethics, standards and techniques.
- legal clerical office practices, procedures and policies.
- orally convey the meaning from and into english and spanish by interpreting in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes. The meaning must be conveyed accurately, not editing, summarizing, adding meaning, or omitting.
- convey the meaning of the text from and into english and spanish by written translation.
- comprehend and retain dialogue in both languages at the same rate and in a manner consistent with courtroom procedures.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, witnesses, other court personnel, supervisors and co‑workers.
- learn and apply a variety of court procedures and practices.
- follow instructions.
