The San Francisco City Attorney’s Office is looking for a qualified and motivated legal secretary to join its Airport Team.
Appointment Type:Temporary Provisional (TPV)
This temporary position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process, is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. The position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service examination process. Successful participation in that examination and selection through an open competitive process is required for consideration of a permanent appointment.

The Airport Team is a collaborative and dynamic group composed of nine attorneys and one legal secretary. The team serves as in‑house legal counsel to the Airport Commission, an enterprise department of the City and County of San Francisco that owns and operates San Francisco International Airport. The Commission has an annual operating budget exceeding $1 billion and a workforce of over 1,600 employees.
The team is located at the Airport.
Legal secretaries work under the direction of attorneys and provide a variety of secretarial and clerical duties within a fast‑paced transactional and civil litigation practice. The responsibilities listed below illustrate typical duties; they are not exhaustive.
- Prepare and edit a wide variety of legal documents in proper format, including contracts, leases, memoranda of understanding, correspondence, motions, discovery, subpoenas and notices (with knowledge of, or ability to create, Tables of Authorities and Tables of Contents).
- Know and apply the California Tort Claims Act claims intake and processing procedures.
- Review, prepare, edit, and finalize resolutions and ordinances for submission to the Airport Commission or Board of Supervisors.
- Possess practical knowledge of multiple word‑processing systems, spreadsheet software, and case‑management systems.
- Maintain and update attorney meetings, team calendars and time‑billing records; keep abreast of important court dates, local court rules and filing procedures (including e‑filing); prioritize duties and deadlines to accommodate attorneys’ schedules.
- Manage contracts and invoicing processes for outside counsel, and inform attorneys of contract expenditures and budgets.
- Open, maintain, monitor, organize, and close legal case files and maintain correspondence and record files.
- File documents with state and federal trial courts, courts of appeal, and administrative bodies.
- Perform general administrative tasks as required.
- Exercise judgment and discretion with confidential matters.
- Exercise discretion and tact when contacting court staff, vendors, and other City departments.
