Departmental OverviewResidential and Student Services Programs (RSSP) provides residential student housing, family housing, residential life programs, facilities services (maintenance, custodial, desk operations), and dining services. RSSP also conducts year‑round conference business, operates seven campus restaurants, and manages several faculty apartments.
Position SummaryUnder the direct supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, the Lead Custodian is responsible for interior and exterior custodial duties, assisting with the direction of all custodial work and responsible for providing custodial services for all apartments and common buildings in Unit 1 Housing.

Responsibilities- Work with supervisor to plan daily and weekly work assignments.
- Provide leadership, direct, support and train Senior Custodians.
- Monitor performance of Senior Custodians to identify training needs.
- Communicate concerns, recommend solutions to management.
- Identify and plan special cleaning as required, ensuring standards are met.
- Instruct staff on safe use of chemicals and equipment.
- Assist in interviewing job applicants.
- Inventory, organize and restock cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Manage staff keys and security according to departmental policies.
- Assist supervisor with inspecting all areas, including work performed by outside vendors.
- Communicate with supervisor regularly and with all levels of staff and customers.
- Assist supervisor with training staff in customer service best practices.
- Collaborate with various groups and entities (Front Office, Maintenance, Resident Programs).
- Operate, maintain and set up a full range of cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, buffers, wet/dry vacuums, floor scrubbing machines).
- Dust, wipe and clean moldings, windowsills, handrails, door tracks and furniture.
- Sweep, mop and clean floors and stairwells.
- Strip or scrub floors using buffers and auto scrubbers.
- Vacuum, sweep, shampoo and spot‑clean rugs and carpets.
- Clean, polish and wax floors and furniture.
- Clean fireplaces, mantels, screens, laundry machines and kitchen appliances.
- Clean and disinfect shower stalls, urinals, toilets, sink basins and mirrors.
- Replace paper products as needed.
- Pick up trash and debris, clean empty wastebaskets.
- Pull trash chutes and clear minor drain stoppages.
- Report damage and maintenance repair needs.
- Move and set up folding tables, arrange chairs and furniture.
- Clean rooms and follow set‑up checklists.
- Perform occasional overtime and other custodial duties as requested by supervisor.
- Remove trash, tape, posters and papers during Move‑out.
- Sweep and vacuum carpeted floors.
- Move furniture weighing up to 240 lbs.
- Clean windows, sills, mirrors and light fixtures.
- Wash and clean furniture and storage units.
- Turn mattresses and replace mattress pads.
- Report any damages.
- Make beds independently and as a team.
- Move furniture weighing up to 240 lbs.
- Empty trash and clean all surfaces.
- Bag and count all linen.
- Deliver linen to buildings and ensure procedures are followed.
- Custodial cleaning operation experience including custodial equipment.
- Knowledge of cleaning products and methods for different floor surfaces.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, PPE and MSDS sheets.
- Relationship building with vendors.
- Organize and manage custodial supply inventory.
- Work with competing demands under minimum direction.
- Planning, scheduling and training knowledge.
- Lift up to 25 lb. and move up to 100 lb.
- English reading, writing and listening skills.
- Communicate effectively in person or radio.
- Maintain respectful and professional behavior.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3 years of custodial services experience.
- Experience overseeing custodial services in college or university housing.
- Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Cal Agenda, email TMA).
- Knowledge of digital camera functions.
This 100% full‑time (40 hrs a week) non‑exempt career position is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits. The budgeted hourly range is $26.84 (Step
8).
