Overview
The Director of Finance and Administration is responsible for providing effective and cost-effective administrative oversight at DOM-SFVAHCS. S/he works closely with the Chief of the Medical Service in establishing goals and objectives to ensure that all operations, including financial and human resource management, are accomplished. The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) acts as the liaison between the Vice Chair, UCSF faculty and staff, SFVAHCS administration, UCSF SOM and DOM leadership, NCIRE, governmental and private agencies, facilities and other university administrators.
She/he works closely with the Vice Chair and DOM s senior managers to make decisions on a wide variety of issues.
The Director of Finance and Administration manages the unique challenges and fiscal and administrative complexities inherent in the daily overlap and interactions of three large bureaucratic institutions, each with their own internal policies and procedures. This daily overlap of fiscal, human resource and administrative processes requires the DFA to assess and manage risk, anticipate conflicts, identify and implement solutions and manage ongoing process to ensure compliance with the policies and regulations of all three institutions.
The DFA is responsible for maximizing the utilization of all fiscal and human resources.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $183,800 - $275,700 (Annual Rate).
Department DescriptionThe Department of Medicine (DOM), the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM), has close to 600 full-time faculty leading top-notch research, clinical, and education programs. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, Zuckerberg San Francisco General - ZSFG, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System – SFVAHCS and Mt. Zion) and 38 divisions. Authority and accountability for the Department rests with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus and Mt.
Zion sites, and also directs the Vice Chairs at the ZSFG and SFVAHCS sites.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, health care or related area and/or equivalent education and experience
- Eight or more years of progressively responsible academic and financial management experience, encompassing financial management, strategic planning and organizational development, clinical practice management, and human resource management
- Seven or more years of experience hiring and managing high-performing employees
- Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs
- Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll
- Demonstrated, exceptional planning, problem solving and decision making skills; demonstrated ability to effectively persuade and negotiate results in complex situations
- Demonstrated ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality
- Demonstrated ability to network and build strong effective professional relationships both internal and external to the division
- Demonstrated ability to fairly and effectively supervise a large number of employees
- Demonstrated commitment to project quality and to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to actively contribute and elevate a department culture of professionalism, respect and integrity
- Independent and critical thinking paired with strong skills in team work and use of judgment in determining priorities and what decisions need to be moved to a higher level
