Job Description Role Overview

A waste company is seeking an experienced Regional Safety Manager to oversee safety operations for one of our largest regions, supporting ~1,000 employees across three companies (two hauling operations and one recycling facility) in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Sunset Scavenger.

This is a true safety leadership role—not environmental or EHS heavy. The ideal candidate has prior regional level safety oversight, proven people management experience, and deep working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and Cal/OSHA regulations within operational, driver intensive environments.

You will directly manage a team of 9 Safety Professionals, partner closely with local GMs and operations leadership, and help elevate the safety program to a more mature, professional level.

90 Days Success Story:
  • Establish credibility and trust with site leadership, GMs, and the safety team
  • Complete extensive site visits across the region to understand operations and risk profiles
  • Assess the current state of safety across the region and identify priority gaps
  • Begin aligning and professionalizing safety practices across all three companies
  • Create collaborative relationships across operations, HR, and claims teams
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a team of 9 Safety Professionals, providing guidance, accountability, and performance management
  • Own safety strategy and execution for a multi site, multi company region with 1,000+ employees
  • Conduct frequent site visits, especially in the first 90 days, to assess risk, culture, and operational gaps
  • Build strong working relationships with General Managers, Operations Leaders, and cross functional partners
  • Refine, standardize, and elevate existing safety programs to support a more mature, professional safety culture
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with Cal/OSHA, OSHA, and DOT regulations
  • Represent safety leadership during hearings, investigations, and legal proceedings as needed
  • Lead the Workers’ Compensation process, working closely with claims teams and stakeholders (intermediate level expertise required)
  • Support and oversee Temporary Alternative Work (TAW) programs managed at the local level
  • Respond to incidents, emergencies, and time sensitive safety issues as they arise

We are a company committed to creating diverse and inclusive environments where people can bring their full, authentic selves to work every day. We are an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer that believes everyone matters. Qualified candidates will receive consideration for employment regardless of their race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, national origin, ancestry, genetic factors, age, disability, protected veteran status, military or uniformed service member status, or any other status or characteristic protected by applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances.
