VP, External Affairs (Full Time)

LOCATION: Bay Area, CA

SALARY: $153,400 to 227,400

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Teach For America is seeking a Vice President, External Affairs to strengthen our network of supporters in the greater Bay Area / Northern California community, to raise the critical resources needed to implement our work locally, and refine our storytelling efforts and brand to continue to position TFA as a key collaborator and partner to our communities. You will set the vision and execute across four crucial functions: (1) raising approximately $10M per year, including planning & executing key fundraising events;

(2) maintaining the health and impact of our local regional boards through effective recruitment, cultivation, and ongoing stewardship; (3) managing our in-year spend to budget; (4) leading our external positioning work, managing various components of our brand, marketing, and communications. You will accomplish this by managing a team of 4 through layers. And you will serve as a key member of our Bay Area Leadership Team, shaping the cultural conditions to ensure our staff is thriving, and maximizing our impact.

Your leadership will ultimately fuel our impact with approximately 160 corps members, 4,000 alumni, and 70 school partners across Richmond, Oakland, San Francisco, the Peninsula, San Jose, and including our innovative Alumni partnership work in our California Capital Valley region.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Set vision for and execute on our fundraising strategy, and securing a robust pipeline of new donors (40%)
  • Manage a team of 4, including through layers, to execute our multifaceted fundraising campaign, including small & large-scale events (including annual gala), individual giving, corporate philanthropy, and foundations
  • Serve as the strategic thought partner to Executive Director on development strategy, ensuring readiness to effectively lead and execute in all external meetings and touchpoints
  • Build seamless development operations, ensuring that we execute great follow-through for every single donor
  • Manage our Board, including stewarding current board members, recruiting new board members, and ensuring excellent, energizing board meetings (20%)

  • Design and lead Board meetings, in partnership with our Bay Area Executive Director, and lead 2 Board sub-committees
  • Partner with Executive Director and Board Chair to ensure Board is operating at the highest levels and creating a meaningful experience for all members
  • Ensure excellent stewardship of each Board member, and recruit and onboard 1-2 Board Members per year, managing the pipeline alongside our broader Board
  • Set vision for short- and long-term financial health, serving as the leader responsible for financial decision-making in alignment to our vision & strategy (10%)

  • Through partnership with our national finance team, manage our in-year budget vs. actuals and monthly forecasting, our team-level spending decisions
  • Ensure strategic communications are leading to strengthening TFA Bay Area’s external narrative (10%)

  • Manage our Director of Development, Marketing, & Communications towards execution of strategies to proactively tell our story and strengthen our brand, including: managing PR firm to secure positive earned media stories, execution of owned media (such as digital/social channels, newsletters to stakeholder groups), management of responsive crisis communications as needed, sourcing of strong stories in partnership with our team to highlight the work of our CMs, alumni, and partners
  • Leadership team member (10%)

  • Serve as a member of Teach For America Bay Area’s Leadership team. Inform the strategic direction of the region, work in collaboration with leadership team colleagues to set ambitious goals and execute strategic plan, and cultivate a thriving regional culture.
  • Contribute to broader organizational vision, mission, and culture (10%)

  • Interview, select, and matriculate incoming corps members
  • Engage in regional learning through attending meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Support Teach For America Bay Area regional events
