San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is an enterprise department of the City and County of San Francisco committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You will be part of a collaborative team responsible for managing airport operations within the Airport Integrated Operations Center (AIOC). The AIOC is a 24/7 operation hub with end‑to‑end visibility, staffed with skilled teams that set the Daily Operations Plan, mitigate pain points, and share information to promote healthy airport operations. As Shift Leader, you will oversee all day‑to‑day AIOC functions, manage AIOC work during operational periods, and coordinate with and lead all AIOC teams during a given shift.

You will maintain constant oversight of operational conditions, prescribe actions to meet KPI standards, and manage operational disruptions and all related consequences while overseeing direct and indirect reports in a medium/large matrix organization.

What You’ll Do:

  • Serve as the integration leader of the AIOC and ensure all teams have the right information, direction, and tools to execute operational plans.
  • Champion the Guest Experience by using SFO’s Customer Journey Map to identify and mitigate customer pain points.
  • Act as a direct supervisor for the on‑shift sections of Current Operations and Operations Planning Team Leaders.
  • Oversee shift bid schedules, work assignments, projects, the run‑of‑show, and the AIOC’s operational tempo.
  • Lead daily Chief Operations Officer briefings, AIOC shift turnover briefings, and other operational updates for SFO leadership.
  • Liaise with matrixed organizations and outside agencies to share information within and outside AIOC.
  • Serve as the single point of contact for SFO’s executive leadership to provide concise operational information.
  • Drive operational decision making for the entire SFO operation and direct response actions to disruptions.
  • Improve communication flows and information sharing between AIOC teams.
  • Lead major projects and programs to maintain a proactive posture in daily operations.
  • Monitor the AIOC organizational structure, staffing, service levels, administrative systems, policies, and procedures, and recommend enhancements.
  • Maintain situational awareness of airport operational conditions and coordinate real‑time data monitoring.
  • Participate in budget development, planning for current and future resource needs, and oversee department budget implementation.
  • Support or back up SFO’s Public Information Officer and the Customer Care team as needed.
  • Respond to and resolve escalated customer issues using de‑escalation techniques and, if necessary, visit customer sites for resolution.
How to qualify

Education: Possession of a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Six (6) years of professional airport/aviation work experience in facilities or operations at a medium to large airport, with three (3) years of supervisory experience.

License: Valid Class C Driver’s License (at time of appointment).

Substitution: Additional full‑time work experience (2,000 hours equals one year) may substitute up to two (2) years of the required education. One (1) year of work experience equals 30 semester units or 45 quarter units.
