About Or Shalom Jewish Community - Or Shalom Jewish Community is a progressive Reconstructionist synagogue in San Francisco known for its inclusivity, social justice activism, and spiritual creativity. Established in 1991, we are a diverse, inclusive and vibrant community of about 175 households. From our home in Bernal Heights, we offer services, educational programs, and community-building events that reflect our commitment to both Jewish tradition and progressive values.
Position Overview - The Community Engagement Manager oversees the full membership experience — from first inquiry through long-term engagement — while also managing communications and events, and maintaining systems that allow the congregation to function smoothly. This role balances relationship-based community building with strong administrative, organizational, and technological skills. This is a full-time, hourly position.
II. Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesMembership
- Builds and sustains meaningful relationships with members by engaging regularly, learning their interests, and serves as a welcoming point of connection.
- Engages prospective members, welcomes new members and supports their integration into the community.
- Recruits and manages volunteers.
- Coordinates member engagement through havurot (affinity groups), tikkun olam action circles, and other member-driven initiatives.
Communications
- Manages external communications, including weekly newsletter, website updates, calendars, targeted emails, healing and yahrzeit lists, social media posts, visuals and graphics, thank you letters, and paper mailings.
- Serves as the first point of contact for members and non-members and directs inquiries as appropriate to the Rabbi, ED and/or lay leaders.
- Builds relationships with other Jewish, cultural, & administrative organizations.
Programming and Events
- Leads planning for and serves as on-site event manager responsible for logistics and supervision of volunteers for events and religious services, including Friday Musical Shabbat services (twice/month), B’mitzvahs, major holidays, member meetings, the Or Shalom Community retreat, and other large community events like the Community Picnic, in coordination with the Rabbi and lay leaders. When unable to serve as on-site event manager, delegates the role to volunteers, providing necessary logistical support in advance.
- Supports advanced planning for member-run, non-staffed events such as Traveling, Zoom and Havurah Shabbats.
- Serves as primary staff lead and support to the Tikkun Olam Committee and its action circles.
Meetings
- Spearheads the Membership Committee in conjunction with the Membership Committee Chair
- Attends weekly staff meetings to provide portfolio updates and participate in strategic planning.
- Attends other committee meetings, as needed, including but not limited to the Community Safety Committee and emergent committees for specific holidays and events.
Technology
- Maintains membership information, event calendaring, and website updates in our CRM database (Shulcloud).
- Creates email communication and weekly newsletter through Constant Contact.
- Maintains Google Groups, Whats App, and Signal communication channels.
- Maintains internal primary calendar of all events, meetings and building space usage.
Educational Support
- In partnership with the Head of Youth and Family Programming, provides administrative and logistical support for youth and family programming, including website updates and enrollment.
- Coordinates scheduling, venue booking and logistical support with B’ Mitzvah Families.
And other responsibilities as they arise, pertaining to membership, community engagement, programming, and communications in coordination with the ED and Rabbi.
III. Supervision and GuidanceThe Community Engagement Manager will be supervised by the Executive Director in day-to-day matters having to do with all aspects of the position. The Community Engagement Manager will also be supported by and report to the Rabbi regarding relevant duties.
