Overview

THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR CURRENT CITY EMPLOYEES ONLY.

This is a Promotional-Only recruitment in accordance with the Class-Based Test (PBT) Civil Service Rules. This recruitment is restricted to current permanent civil service employees of the City and County of San Francisco working within the immediate lower-level classification, 2322 Nurse Manager.

Job Description

Under general supervision, directs the professional nursing and auxiliary staff of a number of patient-care units; plans and directs activities to provide maximum care within the limits of budgetary provisions; participates in guidance, educational and in-service training; directs procurement of supplies and equipment; coordinates services with those of other departments; engages in research activities to improve nursing services and patient care;

and performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities
  • Directs and supervises the professional nursing staff and auxiliary personnel engaged in rendering patient care in various assigned units/departments/divisions; prepares work schedules, makes assignments and supervises activities and evaluates work performance.
  • Coordinates services rendered with those of other departments; checks each unit/department/division to assure compliance with instructions.
  • Supervises assigned personnel in units/departments/divisions; prepares and reviews related time and work performance reports and makes changes in personnel assignments as required or as directed by superior.
  • Personally makes periodic routine unit/department/division visits; confers with nurse managers and staff nurses concerning all new patients; makes bedside visits to all seriously and critically ill patients; discusses specific problems with assigned nurses or physicians.
  • Investigates complaints of patients and staff members; resolves difficulties or refers to executive leadership; utilizes and interprets existing policies as related to nursing care in specific departments; reports unusual occurrences to superior; strives to establish and maintain good relations and morale among all assigned personnel.
  • Participates in planning and coordinating with other hospital department personnel to promote and provide maximum patient care; maintains high quality of in-service training and adequacy of training materials to insure continuous best performances.
  • The Nursing Supervisor performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Current Permanent Civil Service City Employee in class 2322 Nurse Manager
    , who passed probation; AND
  • LICENSE
    :
    Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse License issued by the Board of Registered Nursing; AND
  • EDUCATION
    :
    Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Nursing, Nursing Administration or a closely related field; AND
  • EXPERIENCE
    :
    Two (2) years of experience in the last five (5) years in a designated nursing supervisory or administrative leadership role.

Substitution

  • Three (3) years of additional nursing supervisory experience beyond the required may substitute for the education requirement.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).
