Administers anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an operating room, or to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures outside the OR, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at the UCSF Medical Center.

Responsibilities
  • Determine the condition of patients prior to a procedure by reviewing medical records, assessing patient status, conducting a thorough preoperative evaluation, and performing a physical exam.
  • Plan for and administer anesthetics, including inhalation, intravenous, and regional techniques.
  • Observe, monitor, and record vital signs and other parameters.
  • Insert invasive monitoring lines for anesthesia and for interpretation of physiologic data.
  • Maintain patients in a surgical anesthetic state.
  • Determine the need for, and administer fluids, blood products, and adjunct drugs.
  • Keep the surgeon and attending anesthesiologist informed of the patient's condition.
  • Takes necessary remedial action to correct unacceptable changes in vital signs.
  • Document anesthetic in accordance with legal requirements; record type of anesthetic used.
  • Perform post‑operative follow‑up in the recovery room.
  • Communicate with the attending anesthesia faculty member, as needed, before, during, and after surgery.
  • When not assigned to a case, be available for work as needed, determined by the Daily E1 anesthesia faculty physician.
  • Work with the physician/surgeons/APP colleagues and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management based on accepted practice, including but not limited to performing histories and physicals, pre‑operative planning and coordination with outside providers and PCPs as applicable, responding to change in patient status, and treatments as permitted under scope of practice; provide patient and family education and engage in any approved privileges after the APP has demonstrated competency through proctoring or FPPE process.
  • Answer clinically relevant patient medical advice calls or during bedside communications or in coordination with health care professionals, patients and their families as necessary.
  • Be able to interpret and act upon ordered tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty.
  • Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner; ensure that, if absent, appropriate coverage has been arranged for patient management and communication as appropriate.
  • At all times adhere to all policies and procedures of UCSF Health in terms of HIPAA/Communication/Privacy/Code of Conduct, and any other UCSF or Medical Center policies, which includes meeting the encounter closure requirements of the Medical Staff Bylaws.
  • Provide anesthesia care to patients at all UCSF locations where anesthesia services are currently used, and where anesthesia services will be required in the future.
  • All shifts are variable to meet operational needs and patient care and are subject to change with the required union notice.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center campuses.
  • Required Qualifications
    • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
    • Graduation from a school of anesthesia accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Schools of Anesthesia.
    • Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthetist program.
    • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

    • None.
    License / Certifications
    • Active, unrestricted Nurse Anesthetist licensure in California.
    • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure in California.
    • Current National Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
    • Current American Heart Association BLS certification for healthcare providers.
    • Current American Heart Association ACLS certification.
    • Current American Heart Association PALS certification.
    • Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

    UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Credentialing takes between 60‑90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day. You will be assigned an FPPE template of procedures for CRNAs, but you may add additional privileges on request with an explanation of the purpose.
