Administers anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an operating room, or to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures outside the OR, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at the UCSF Medical Center.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Responsibilities
  • Determines the condition of patients prior to a procedure by reviewing medical records, assessing patient status, conducting a thorough preoperative evaluation, and physical exam.
  • Plans for and administers anesthetics, including inhalation, intravenous, and regional techniques.
  • Observes, monitors, and records vital signs and other parameters.
  • Inserts invasive monitoring lines for anesthetic and for interpretation of physiologic data.
  • Maintains patients in a surgical anesthetic state.
  • Determines the need for, and administers fluids, blood products, and adjunct drugs.
  • Keeps the surgeon and attending anesthesiologist informed of the patient's condition.
  • Takes necessary remedial action to correct unacceptable changes in vital signs.
  • Documents anesthetic in accordance with legal requirements; records type of anesthetic used.
  • Performs post‑operative follow‑up in the recovery room.
  • Communicates with the attending anesthesia faculty member, as needed, before, during, and after surgery.
  • When not assigned to a case, is available for work as needed, determined by the Daily E1 anesthesia faculty physician.
  • Works with physician/surgeons/APP colleagues and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management based on accepted practice, including performing histories and physicals, pre‑operative planning/coordinating with outside providers and PCPs as applicable, responding to changes in patient status, and providing patient and family education.
  • Answers clinically relevant patient medical advice calls or bedside communications in coordination with health care professionals, patients and families as necessary.
  • Interprets and acts upon ordered tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • Assists in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty.
  • Effectively communicates with family or patients in person, telephone, and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner, and ensures that appropriate coverage is arranged when not present.
  • Adheres to all UCSF Health policies and procedures, including HIPAA/Communication/Privacy/Code of Conduct and the Medical Staff Bylaws encounter closure requirements.
  • Provides anesthesia care at all UCSF locations where services are currently used or will be required in the future.
  • Works variable shifts to meet operational needs, subject to required union notice.
  • Provides flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center campuses.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Graduation from a school of anesthesia accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Schools of Anesthesia.
  • Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthetist program.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

License / Certifications
  • Active, unrestricted Nurse Anesthetist licensure in California.
  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure in California.
  • Current National Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification for healthcare providers.
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS certification.
  • Current American Heart Association PALS certification.
  • Registered Nurse status as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Credentialing takes between 60–90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day. APPs will be assigned an FPPE template of procedures for CRNAs, and may add additional privileges on request with an explanation of the purpose.
