Nurse Practice Supervisor

Role Overview

Nurse practitioners utilize advanced practice nursing skills and knowledge for all aspects of patient care. They may practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings, solo or as a partner within a treatment team. Responsibilities include performing physical exams, ordering diagnostic tests, prescribing treatments, educating patients, and serving as a patient's primary healthcare provider.

• Supervise nurse practitioners responsible for patient evaluation, testing, diagnosis, plans of care, and treatment within UCSF Center for Reproductive Health.
• Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, APPs, and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management, including histories and physicals, pre‑operative planning, coordination with outside providers/PCPs, and responding to changes in patient status.
• Provide prescriptions, evaluations, referrals, and treatments as permitted under standardized procedures; provide home health services, DME, DMV evaluations, referrals, consultations, physical therapy, order radiographic or diagnostic requests, and specialized treatments such as chemotherapy with approved privilege.
• Offer patient and family education, arrange follow‑up appointments, and engage in approved privileges after demonstrating competency through proctoring or FPPE.
• Identify independent practice privileges on the ECHO website and log procedural activity in the eLOG system.
• Evaluate, assess, and document treatment plans based on patient HPI or established plan of care in collaboration with attending physicians.
• Answer clinically relevant medical advice calls and coordinate bedside communications with healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
• Evaluate routine, acute, critical, new patients, or specialty consultations; discuss findings with attending and staff and document in the EHR.
• Interpret and act upon ordered tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
• Assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty.
• Communicate effectively with families and patients in person, by telephone, or via electronic modalities, ensuring timely response.
• Arrange appropriate clinical coverage for patient management and communication during absences.
• Adhere to UCSF Health policies, including HIPAA, communication, privacy, code of conduct, and Med Staff Bylaws.
• Attend APP UCSF Onboarding Sessions (five 2‑hour sessions over 12 months) and comply with scheduling and communication policies per the collective bargaining agreement.
• Perform additional routine or periodic duties unique to specific clinical services, including transvaginal ultrasounds, patient response assessment to fertility treatments, early pregnancy assessment with ultrasound and beta‑hCG, administration of mifepristone for medical abortions, order labs and prescriptions, manage fertility preservation cycles (including transgender and cancer patients), pre‑procedure histories and physical exams, donor and surrogate cycle management, FDA‑required physicals, participation in research ultrasound exams, and provision of care for intrauterine insemination patients.
• Schedule may include weekend work.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and manage complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a nurse practitioner.
• Solid knowledge of clinical and operational issues for nurse practitioners performing advanced‑practice nursing within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, treatment, patient‑care concepts, policies, outcome measurement, quality standards, ethics, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.
