LVN Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases Clinics

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Licensed Vocational Nurse works in collaboration with the clinical team in delivering high‑quality care to patients in the Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases Clinics. The type of patients treated in the clinic include those receiving allergy immunotherapy services.

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Licensed Vocational Nurse works in collaboration with the clinical team in delivering high‑quality care to patients in the Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases Clinics. The type of patients treated in the clinic include those receiving allergy immunotherapy services.

The Allergy and Immunologic (AI) Clinic evaluates and treats patients with a variety of allergic conditions which include asthma, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, rashes, food allergy, drug hypersensitivity, and bee sting allergy. AI also cares for patients with immune deficiencies, frequent infections, and inflammatory diseases of other types. Complete skin testing and injection therapy for allergies are available.

The UCSF Infectious Diseases Clinic offers evaluation and treatment for a wide range of infectious diseases, with a focus on complex or unusual conditions. We often care for patients with the following concerns:

• Recurrent infections of the skin or other soft tissue (supportive tissues such as muscles and fat)
• Recurrent urinary tract infections
• Recurrent herpes virus infections
• Mycobacterial infections of the lungs and skin
• Coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever, a type of fungal infection
• Fever of unknown cause
• Bone and joint infections
• OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy)

General duties and responsibilities include clinical and administrative functions. Supports the nursing duties and follows the nursing process. Clinical duties include managing patient flow, obtaining vital signs, reviewing health maintenance status, immunizations, monitoring and maintaining exam room supplies, entering and reviewing patient information in the electronic medical record (Apex) as appropriate, and assisting with emergencies as outlined in the department Emergency Manual.

The Licensed Vocational Nurse supports administrative functions as required that include, but are not limited to, patient registration, verifying health insurance, appointment scheduling, telephone reception, insurance authorization management, new patient coordination, and copay collection. Demonstrates outstanding customer service skills with patients and staff. The Licensed Vocational Nurse must be proficient with the use of the electronic medical record system and must comply with all organizational policies pertaining to HIPAA and the safeguard of all patient health information.

The Licensed Vocational Nurse must comply with organizational nursing policies and state laws pertaining to scope of practice and adhere to professional standards as a licensed nurse. Adheres to infection control and safety policies at all times. Must maintain current licensure at all times and complete all required initial and annual trainings. Notifies the Administrative Nurse and clinical team of problems in the clinic.

• Identifies the needs and responses of patients to medical regimen and treatment through observation of symptoms, emotional state, and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Recognizes and reports specific physical and emotional conditions/needs/concerns of patients to appropriate members of the health care team. Alerts a provider of unusual observations of patients to facilitate immediate attention, e.g., chest pain, shortness of breath, allergic reactions.

• Works cooperatively and participates with the health care team to discuss patient’s alternatives to health care services and to develop short‑ and long‑range goals to meet the patient’s needs.
