The Nurse is responsible for the assessment of patient needs, implementation of research protocols and nursing interventions, and evaluation of outcomes. The Nurse is responsible for facilitating medical research based on individual protocol requirements data collection and/or collection of specimens within the CTSI Clinical Research Center for the implementation of approved protocols. This position requires professional nursing knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with other members of the health care team.
The position requires the knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide competent patient care. The Nurse reports to the Assoc. Nursing Director or Charge Nurse for shift duties. The Nurse will collaborate with all interdisciplinary services.

- Assess patient care needs and gather information necessary to formulate a
- Assesses the protocol and nursing guidelines prior to implementation for potential ethical, safety, and implementation problems and recommends change to the appropriate staff.
- The Nurse analyzes and interprets signs and symptoms of adverse reactions, diagnostic tests, information received from physicians, and other healthcare team members.
- The Nurse assesses actual and potential patient problems/concerns that include physical, behavioral, psychosocial ability to participate in research study.
- The Nurse assesses and identifies new patient problems/concerns on an ongoing basis.
- The Nurse exercises judgment in planning nursing care in accordance with UCSF/CRC policies and procedures and in compliance with the research protocol.
- The Nurse implements a plan of care to facilitate the research study based on the individual protocol requirements.
- The Nurse performs research procedures skillfully and adheres to protocol instructions.
- The Nurse administers chemotherapy.
- Nurse implements new methods of symptom treatment and monitors patients progress.
- The Nurse explains, teaches, and reinforces patients’/families’ knowledge of study.
- The Nurse evaluates the care plan’s effectiveness in meeting the changing health needs of the patient.

- The Nurse coordinates clinical activities to ensure proper patient care.
- Acquires required supplies for collection of research data, obtaining specimens, and assisting in sample processing.
- Collaborates with clinical investigators, protocol staff, and CRC staff to insure smooth implementation of protocol requirements.
- Performs BLS and/or other specialized life support requirement designated by work area.
- Provides in-service education and research orientation to bedside nursing.
- Documents all procedures in the patient’s medical record.
- Successful completion of annual competency testing.
- Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory processing procedures conforming to all policies and procedures related to specimen handling and processing.
