Position: Staff Research Associate Cardiology

Overview

Staff Research Associate Cardiology (MED-CORE-CARD; Full Time; 87865 )

Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate (SRA) assists the principal investigator (PI) with active experiments and the daily tasks related to the operation of a biomedical research laboratory. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in graduate school in the biomedical sciences. Our research is focused on chronic hypoxia sensing and adaptation, and mechanisms of cardiovascular complications from cancer-directed therapies. We study how cells, tissues, and organisms respond to chronic hypoxia at molecular and whole-body physiology levels, using in vitro models and mouse models to investigate transcription factors, gene and protein regulatory pathways, and metabolic changes in hypoxia.

This work intersects hypoxia signaling, lipid metabolism, and cardiovascular disease, including models of pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and obesity. We use biochemical assays, multi-omics, and computational approaches to dissect hypoxia adaptation mechanisms, and we investigate cardiovascular effects of cancer therapies with pre-clinical models of pericarditis.

The SRA will have duties relevant to these goals and is expected to become increasingly independent over time. It is expected that the SRA will become well-versed in multiple molecular and biochemical techniques to analyze tissues and cells (e.g., western blotting, qPCR, and generation of DNA constructs). The role includes assisting with mouse model experiments, active participation in mouse colony maintenance, and support for lab organization and lab management.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range depends on factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification  represented positions, placement within the salary range follows the collective bargaining agreement rules.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the principal investigator with active experiments and daily laboratory operations.
  • Develop independence and proficiency in multiple molecular and biochemical techniques to analyze tissues and cells (e.g., western blotting, qPCR, generation of DNA constructs).
  • Assist with mouse model experiments and participate in mouse colony maintenance and lab organization/management.
Qualifications

SRA 1 (9613)

  • BA/BS in a related science (background in biology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, and chemistry) and knowledge of or experience with the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or equivalent training/experience.
  • Prior publications or significant contributions to manuscripts.
  • Experience with mouse colony maintenance and mouse breeding, or similar maintenance of live model organisms (including school experience).
  • Experience with molecular cloning and biochemistry (including school experience or additional training).
  • Experience with basic cell culture techniques (including school experience).
  • Experience with DNA and protein gel electrophoresis; western blotting; PCR; quantitative RT-PCR; cell culture; and DNA/RNA extractions from animal tissues and cell samples (including school experience).
  • Knowledge of molarity, sterile technique, Mendelian genetics, and general microbiology.
  • Ability to perform standard data analysis and basic bioinformatics programming (e.g., Python, R, or Matlab).
  • Ability to multi-task and present/organize data.
  • Familiarity with experimental design (controls, technical vs biological replicates).
  • Ability to analyze data (Excel, Prism, Word; bioinformatics strongly desired) and devise follow-up/troubleshooting experiments.
  • Strong scientific writing skills (hypotheses, aims, approaches, and anticipated results).
  • Ability to review and discuss scientific literature.
  • Ability to summarize research findings verbally and in writing.
  • Strong interest in cardiovascular biology and physiology.
  • Ability to maintain organized workflows and protocols.

SRA 2 (9617)

  • In addition to the above, at least one year of recent, directly related work experience using techniques and methods required by the position.
  • Master's degree is desirable but not essential.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BA/BS in a field relevant to biomedical research (e.g., biology, chemistry, molecular biology, pre-medicine).
  • MS degree in a relevant biomedical field.
  • Experience with rodent handling and experiments, including injections and oral gavage.
  • Previous basic science research experience (may be gained in school).
