Position
Junior Specialist, Department of Microbiology & Immunology — Tarnopol Lab, San Francisco, CA.
DescriptionThe Tarnopol Lab studies protein toxin function and evolution at the host‑pathogen interface using naturally occurring insect‑pathogen systems as models. Successful candidates will contribute to research projects that develop natural pathogen systems in Drosophila and/or high‑throughput mutagenesis techniques. An exceptional candidate may lead an independent project, devise new research ideas, and remain current with the literature. The specialist will also assist with day‑to‑day lab operations, general lab duties, and positive lab citizenship.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct molecular biology and genetic experiments (PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, sequencing).
- Maintain and generate Drosophila lines for genetic crosses and phenotypic assays.
- Collect, analyze, and present experimental data.
- Assist with lab maintenance tasks and reagent preparation.
- Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) in a biological or related scientific discipline, or at least four years of relevant research experience.
- Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience in a research setting.
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis).
- Working knowledge of bioinformatic and data analysis pipelines.
- Willingness to work in insect model systems.
- Strong motivation to pursue advanced training or graduate education in biomedical research.
