Job Function Summary

Involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting a wide variety of research data. Designs and conducts research including selecting data samples, developing research instruments, analyzing collected information according to established statistical methods, and developing recommendations based on research findings. Prepares reports, charts, tables, and other visual aids to interpret and communicate data and results.

Job Description

The position functions as a statistical analyst for the UCSF Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine supporting divisional principal investigators. The research data analyst will primarily be responsible for developing and conducting complex statistical analyses and providing database development and management. The current position is specifically tailored to work on exposure‑related lung diseases, focusing on the mechanisms by which environmental exposures contribute to chronic lung diseases and their systemic effects.

Responsibilities
  • Plan long‑term statistical studies, including proposal preparation, survey instrument design, and sampling procedures.
  • Oversee and conduct the statistical component of new and ongoing protocols, working closely with principal investigators, research managers, trainees, and CRCs.
  • Gather, analyze, prepare, and summarize data; recommend statistical approaches, trends, and sources.
  • Conduct complex statistical analyses; prepare findings for presentation at professional meetings and publication in medical journals.
  • Identify multivariate strategies.
  • Prepare reports of studies for internal validation and cross‑validation studies.
  • Analyze interrelationships of data and define logical aspects of data sets.
  • Develop systems for organizing data to identify and report trends.
  • Manage database of research data for projects.
  • Obtain solutions and manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities.
  • Review new software instruments and potential effects on statistical testing; make programming modifications as needed.
  • Keep abreast of technical advances in storage, documentation, and dissemination of computerized data.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Three or more years of experience performing complex statistical analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of research function.
  • Skills associated with statistical analysis, systems programming, biostatistics, and informatics.
  • Skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
  • Expertise with R, STATA, PRISM, and Microsoft Office.
  • Graphic design experience – ability to create presentations and publications (briefs, dashboards) using software such as Publisher.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related area.
  • Familiarity with cardiopulmonary physiology and lung and heart function measurements.
  • Skills in project management.
