Tarnopol Lab – Junior Specialist
Department of Microbiology & Immunology
The Tarnopol Lab is seeking a highly motivated full-time Junior Specialist to join our group. The Tarnopol Lab studies protein toxin function and evolution at the host-pathogen interface to understand how these molecules mediate disease and immunity. We use naturally occurring insect-pathogen systems as models. Successful candidates will contribute to research projects developing natural pathogen systems in Drosophila and/or developing high-throughput mutagenesis techniques in Drosophila.
An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, and be familiar with the literature, where appropriate. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, perform general lab duties, and be a positive lab citizen.
We are looking for a candidate who is excited to work on young projects and wants additional training before applying to graduate degree programs. Successful candidates will be involved in many different facets of lab functions, and key responsibilities include:
- Conducting molecular biology and genetic experiments, including PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, and sequencing.
- Maintaining and generating Drosophila lines for genetic crosses and phenotypic assays.
- Collecting, analyzing, and presenting experimental data.
- Contributing to lab maintenance tasks and reagent preparation.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in a biological or related scientific discipline, or at least four years of relevant research experience.
- Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a research setting.
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques (i.e. PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis).
- Working knowledge of bioinformatic and data analysis pipelines.
- Willingness to work in insect model systems.
- Strong motivation to pursue advanced training or graduate education in biomedical research.
See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $55,000-$58,600.
