Job Summary
The Sweet-Cordero laboratory is recruiting a full‑time Staff Research Associate/Laboratory Technician. The group is based in Rock Hall at the Mission Bay campus in San Francisco, within a hub of established pediatric oncology investigators who will mentor scientific staff. Dr. Sweet‑Cordero is an MD‑trained physician‑scientist and practicing pediatric oncologist whose research program aims to systematically define and target molecular pathways for the treatment of pediatric sarcomas.
The lab employs advanced sequencing approaches to analyze pediatric cancer samples.
We are looking for highly motivated, collaborative individuals eager to learn and experiment under close faculty mentorship in childhood cancer research. The position will focus on generating high‑quality RNA and DNA sequencing data from pediatric cancer samples, requiring a strong molecular biology background and meticulous attention to detail given the difficulty of obtaining clinical samples. The position will end one year from start date, with hiring under career conversion waiver criteria c) and funding for the position a one‑time grant of 18 months or less.
Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct RNA and DNA isolation and sequencing library preparation (80% of time).
- Manage laboratory inventory and oversee ordering to maintain relevant supplies (10% of time).
- Attend laboratory meetings, maintain a detailed laboratory notebook, and present data generated along with interpretation and plans for next steps (10% of time).
- BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with isolation of RNA/DNA from clinical samples.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with a pediatric sarcoma research laboratory, including in‑vivo work with animal models.
- Experience with molecular biology (including cloning, PCR, quantitative PCR) and immunoblotting.
- Interest or prior experience in cancer biology.

SalaryThe final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
