Nelson Lab - Junior Specialist

Job DescriptionThe Junior Specialist will join the Nelson lab at UCSF, where we investigate the cellular and circuit mechanisms of movement disorders, using mouse models. We use a combination of systems neuroscience techniques, including electrophysiology, optogenetics, and mouse behavioral assays to unravel how basal ganglia activity and connectivity contribute to movement disorders like Parkinson’s Disease, dyskinesias and dystonia. In this role, you will manage our transgenic mouse colony and perform immunohistochemistry experiments, while also engaging in individual or collaborative research projects involving mouse behavior, stereotaxic surgery, and optogenetics.
On the job training will be provided for these techniques.
- Collaborative management of our transgenic mouse colony (breeding, genotyping, weaning) and ordering of supplies.
- Postmortem neuroanatomical studies including brain sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and imaging.
- Learning new lab techniques and participating in individual or collaborative research projects.
- Attending and participating in lab meetings.
- A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) or at least four years of research experience.
- Minimum of one year of neuroscience wet lab experience.
- Ability to perform genotyping (PCR), immunohistochemistry (brain sectioning, staining, imaging), and basic rodent handling skills.
- Experience with rodent behavioral assays, stereotaxic surgery, systems neuroscience approaches, coding skills in MATLAB and/or Python.
Salary range: $55,000–$58,600 (see Table 24B for details).
