Position: Scientist 3 - CVRM Discovery Biology

The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech!

The Opportunity

Are you passionate about revolutionizing treatments for obesity, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disorders? Do you want to help build and shape a growing CVRM biology group at Genentech? Do you want to connect human biology to therapeutic development?

CVRM Discovery Biology within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) is expanding its research biology team to strengthen how we uncover disease mechanisms and advance therapeutic targets for cardiometabolic disease. Our group combines in vitro and in vivo experimental biology with human genetics, functional genomics, AI/ML-enabled discovery, and translational insight to identify druggable regulators of disease biology and champion high-confidence targets through early drug discovery.

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Scientist 3 to investigate novel pathways and help advance new treatment strategies for metabolic disease. In this lab-based role, you will design and execute experiments to explore central and peripheral mechanisms of metabolism, translate complex datasets into actionable biological hypotheses, and work closely with colleagues across research biology, computational biology, functional genomics, drug discovery, and therapeutic project teams.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technology-forward biologist who wants to pair data-rich discovery with hands‑on mechanistic biology to help build the next generation of cardiometabolic medicines.

As an integral member of our dynamic team, you will be:

Providing Scientific Execution:

  • Design and execute in vitro and in vivo experiments to uncover molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic disease.

  • Build and validate disease-relevant cellular and animal models that enable rigorous testing of target biology and therapeutic hypotheses.

  • Generate, analyze, and interpret data to define the role of novel targets in disease-relevant pathways and physiology.

  • Use a broad range of cellular, molecular, and cardiometabolic approaches to deliver decision-enabling results for early drug discovery programs.

Providing Project Contribution:

  • Contribute to the progression of cardiometabolic programs by delivering high-quality, reproducible data.

  • Participate in experimental planning and provide scientific input to project strategy discussions.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of experimental work and ensure data integrity.

Collaborating and Communicating:

  • Work closely with the Lab Head and cross-functional teams across Research, Computation, Translational Medicine, and Drug Development.

  • Present data at internal meetings and contribute to external publications and scientific conferences.

  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project milestones.

Who You Are
  • Educational Background:
PhD in a life science discipline (e.g., Metabolism, Cell Biology, Genetics, or a related field) or a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree with post doc or equivalent industry experience.

  • Strong foundation in metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, and/or immunology.

  • Proven track record through high impact publications in metabolic disease research.

  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute experiments independently and analyze complex datasets.

  • Track record of independent research to conceive ideas, develop studies and derive conclusions as demonstrated by high profile publications.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills, with enthusiasm for working in a cross-functional environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficiency in advanced in vitro models—such as human primary cells and organoids—paired with experience using CRISPR, RNAi, and other gene perturbation methods.

  • Hands‑on experience with metabolic, biochemical, receptor pharmacology, or cell-based assays to study lipid handling, mitochondrial function, insulin/GPCR signaling, intercellular…
