Research Assistant/Associate, Biotech Research, Research Scientist
Position Description
Assistant or Associate Specialist – Goldberg Lab. Department of Physiology, University of California, San Francisco. This position requires mammalian cell culture and techniques including CRISPR/Cas9 gene expression control, pharmacological treatments, transfection, cloning and cell passaging. Experiments also involve molecular and biochemical analyses: RT-PCR, western blot, mass spectrometry (run by a collaborator) and transcriptomics, plus sample preparation. The candidate will manage multiple cell lines, be trained in new techniques, plan experiments with the lab and Dr.
Goldberg, and become increasingly independent. They will receive training in mouse handling and in vivo techniques, genotyping, and colony management. The candidate is expected to present at lab meetings with updates, data figures, interpretation, and future plans, and to participate in general lab duties such as assisting members, cleaning, monitoring supplies, ordering, maintaining a lab notebook and data storage per lab rules.
- Experience with cell culture and molecular biology approaches (CRISPR, qPCR, plasmid design and construction).
- For an Assistant Specialist:
Master’s or bachelor’s degree in biological science with three or more years of hands‑on basic science research experience. - For an Associate Specialist:
Master’s degree (or equivalent) or five to ten years of relevant experience. - Willingness to work with mice.
- Experience with data‑analysis software.
- Meeting the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
- Candidates must provide a CV stating qualifications (or pending qualifications) upon submission.
- MS degree in a biological sciences discipline that required hands‑on basic science research as part of the program.
- Highly organized, experienced with presentations, collaborative with lab members, genome‑engineering software, microscopy, western blotting and mass‑spectrometry sample prep.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $63,500-$88,000.
