Position Description

Assistant Professional Researcher in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, University of California, San Francisco. Availability:
August 2026.

We seek a highly qualified candidate under the direction of Arun Wiita, MD, PhD. UCSF’s lab focuses on immunotherapy, quantitative proteomics, and bench‑to‑bedside applications in blood cancers. The role includes four major foci: development of new cellular therapies for multiple myeloma; creation of novel patient‑derived xenograft models; study of tumor immunology using immunocompetent mouse models; and bioinformatics of omics datasets related to myeloma patients or models.

Cell culture, molecular cloning, lentiviral transduction, flow cytometry, CRISPR‑based T‑cell engineering, in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity assays, murine tissue harvest, functional assays with murine immune cells, and preclinical therapeutic assessment will be performed. Computational work will involve analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data and machine learning approaches. The position collaborates closely with the clinical myeloma service at UCSF and other leading clinical and immunotherapy groups.

• Develop and optimize cellular therapies with potential for clinical translation in multiple myeloma.
• Create novel patient‑derived xenograft models of multiple myeloma.
• Study tumor immunology of multiple myeloma using immunocompetent mouse models.
• Analyze omics datasets related to myeloma patients or models.
• Collaborate with clinical myeloma service, academic research groups, and biotech partners.
• Write grant proposals, maintain animal care protocols, and mentor junior scientists.
• Participate in abstracts and publications.

• MD or PhD (or equivalent terminal degree).
• Minimum five years of laboratory‑based research experience with lab organization and mentoring.
• Strong publication record and demonstrated research productivity.
• Proficiency in cell culture, flow cytometry, molecular cloning, cellular therapy development, CRISPR/Cas9, and in vivo tumor modeling.
• Proficiency in genomic and transcriptomic analysis, and experience in machine learning approaches.
• Preference for prior clinical experience treating multiple myeloma patients.

• Salary range: $96,700‑$126,400 (see Table 13B for details).
