Job Summary

The Drug Research Unit at UCSF is seeking a highly motivated lab manager in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy. The position will expand management skills and provide experience in drug development and lab management. The Laboratory Manager oversees a complex research laboratory that serves the DAIDS-sponsored AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and provides analytical support for NIH domestic and international grant‑supported research.

Duties

& Essential Job Functions

70% – Laboratory Management

  • Ensure compliance with UCSF, county, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain GLP practices and meet all quality control and assurance specifications.
  • Keep laboratory records and manage CDC import permits.
  • Serve as the lab point of contact for Environmental Health & Safety; coordinate inspections and maintain chemical, biological, and radiation authorizations.
  • Maintain current safety training for all personnel.
  • Track all projects from multiple sites, oversee shipping/receipt of samples, and approve final analytical result reports.
  • Determine needs for new analytical procedures and schedule workloads for timely analysis.
  • Oversee equipment use, maintenance, and certification.
  • Represent the laboratory in meetings and conference calls.
  • Train personnel on the Lab Data Management System (LDMS).
  • Assist the Director with protocol budget determination for sample analysis.
  • Coordinate laboratory participation in the Clinical Pharmacology Quality Assurance and Quality Control Proficiency Program (CPQA).
  • Act as the point person for information technology.

20% – Supervisory

  • Supervise and schedule laboratory support staff; plan and direct work of associates, fellows, and students.
  • Communicate staff changes, provide orientation, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Promote staff professional training and career development.
  • Oversee recruitment, interview, and hire decisions, including job descriptions and selection processes.
  • Make staffing decisions within budgetary limits.
  • Approve leave requests and timesheets, resolve complaints, and conduct disciplinary actions.
  • Promote safety and ensure proper equipment use.
  • Provide financial and operational justification for FTE changes.
  • Oversee inventory planning, purchasing, and capital equipment negotiations.
  • Assist in budgeting for research projects and analytical services.
  • Coordinate with the Department Research Service Coordinator on grant budget submissions.

10% – Research Support

  • Supervise laboratory research and/or instructional experiment design.
  • Collaborate on complex research projects and experimental design with academic supervisors.
  • Calculate results, compile reports, and support development of new quantification methods.
  • Validate new methods per FDA guidelines and write SOPs.
  • Oversee quantitative chemical analysis of antiviral, malaria, tuberculosis, or other drugs using HPLC or LCMSMS methods.
Required Qualifications
  • BA/BS in a related science and 3+ years of directly related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory practices and safety.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn scientific applications.
  • Team player.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

  • Lab management skills.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range depends on work experience and internal equity.
