Position: Anthropic Fellows Program, Reinforcement Learning

About the Program

Anthropic’s Fellows Program is designed to foster AI research and engineering talent. Fellows receive funding and mentorship to conduct empirical research projects aligned with our research priorities, with the goal of producing a public outcome such as a paper.

Program Overview

Fellows work full‑time for four months, primarily using external infrastructure such as open‑source models and public APIs. Each fellow is matched with a mentor who is a researcher ults of the work are expected to be shared publicly.

What to Expect
  • 4 months of full‑time research
  • Direct mentorship from Anthropic researchers
  • Access to a shared workspace in Berkeley, California or London, UK (or remote option within the region)
  • Connection to the broader AI safety and security research community
  • Weekly stipend: 3,850 USD / 2,310 GBP / 4,300 CAD + benefits (vary by country)
  • Funding for compute (~$15,000 /month) and other research expenses
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and evaluate empirical research projects aligned with the workstream interests.
  • Communicate findings clearly to mentors and the broader community.
  • Collaborate with fellow researchers on cross‑disciplinary problems.
Qualifications
  • Strong technical background in computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Fluent in Python programming.
  • Motivated by ensuring AI is safe and beneficial for society.
  • Highly collaborative, thrives in fast‑paced environments.
  • Enjoys bridging research and engineering, and can balance exploration with rigor.
  • Experience with large‑scale distributed systems and high‑performance computing (preferred).
Additional Candidate Strengths (Optional)
  • Background in economics, social sciences, cybersecurity, or a discipline relevant to a specific workstream.
  • Experience in research or engineering related to the chosen workstream.
Benefits & Compensation

The stipend is 3,850 USD / 2,310 GBP / 4,300 CAD per week for 40 hours per week over 4 months, with a potential extension. Benefits vary by country and may include health insurance, vacation, and parental leave.

Logistics & Eligibility

Fellows must have work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada and be located in that country during the program. Remote participation is possible for fellows in those regions. Visa sponsorship is not available. Eligibility requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and relevant field of study, although experience is a major factor in consideration.
