Position: Chen Lab - Research Specialist (Biological and Medical Informatics)

Position Overview

The Chen Laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco seeks a computational biologist to join as a Research Specialist (Biological and Medical Informatics). The role focuses on identifying molecular drivers of prostate cancer, understanding mechanisms of disease progression and metastasis, and developing novel therapeutic strategies using cancer genomics, cell biology, imaging mass cytometry, and other profiling approaches.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with ongoing experiments and, depending on skill level, conduct independent research under guidance of Dr. Chen.
  • Design and implement analyses of high‑dimensional data (single‑cell RNA sequencing, whole‑genome sequencing, proteomics, digital pathology).
  • Use standard bioinformatics tools and databases to uncover biologically meaningful insights that address key research questions.
  • Work independently with support from team members to complete data analysis projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Self‑motivated, fast learner, critical thinker, enthusiastic about science and medicine.
  • Team player with outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Junior rank: baccalaureate degree or 4 years of relevant research experience.
  • Assistant rank: master’s degree or baccalaureate degree with 3+ years of research experience.
  • Associate rank: master’s degree or 5–10 years of relevant research experience.
  • Full Specialist: terminal degree or 10+ years of experience in the relevant specialization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Independent research experience with standard genomic and transcriptomic analyses.
  • Experience implementing and documenting data analysis pipelines for research.
  • Experience with cloud‑based storage and service tools (essential).
  • Preference for Junior Specialist applicants interested in pursuing biomedical sciences PhD or MD/PhD.
Salary and Appointment

Salary commensurate with experience and training; available immediately. Estimated range $55,000–$194,800.
