Choksi Lab
- Junior Specialist School of Dentistry
- Cell and Tissue Biology

Position Description

The Choksi Lab at the University of California, San Francisco is seeking a highly motivated applicant for a full-time position as a Junior Specialist. The primary focus of our laboratory is airway stem cell differentiation, or how progenitors in the trachea build and regenerate the specialized cell types that line and protect our airways. We employ stem cell biology, developmental biology, mouse genetics, and single-cell genomics to understand this process across development, regeneration, and chronic respiratory disease.

This position is equally split between two roles. Roughly 50% of the time will be devoted to management of the laboratory's mouse colony, including breeding, genotyping, meticulous record-keeping, and coordination with vivarium staff. The remaining 50% will be devoted to the development and execution of an independent research project studying airway stem cell differentiation, under the direct mentorship of the PI.

This provides the opportunity to take ownership of a scientific project, generate and analyze their own data and contribute to publications, while building the organizational skills required for experimental science. Specific technical duties will include mouse husbandry and tissue harvest, airway epithelial cell culture, fluorescence activated cell sorting, immunofluorescence and microscopy, molecular biology, and single-cell genomics techniques.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the specialist will help with general day-to-day lab operations and be an active, positive part of the team. The position offers an opportunity to work at the cutting edge of stem cell research in a highly collaborative scientific environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant field or at least four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Prior laboratory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mouse handling.
  • Experience with culturing primary cells.

This is a two-year position at minimum, and we ask that applicants be able to commit to that timeframe. The role is especially well suited to individuals planning to pursue graduate training in research who want substantive, hands‑on lab experience beforehand.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $57,000-$60,700.
