Position: Manager On Duty - West Portal

Spangler’s Market is growing! Our newest location in the West Portal neighborhood of San Francisco is seeking an experienced, dependable, and team-oriented Manager on Duty (MOD) to help lead daily store operations.

We are hiring for 1 full‑time position (30 hours or more/week), and a candidate with flexible availability, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays, is preferred.

The ideal candidate will play a key leadership role, supporting front‑line staff, ensuring an exceptional customer experience, and fostering a positive, collaborative workplace culture. This position serves as a bridge between departments, customers, and upper management, ensuring smooth communication and efficient operations throughout the store. Prior experience in buying and receiving is preferred.

The individual will lead by example, uphold our store values, and support both team morale and operational success.

Pay Range: $22.50 – $27.00 per hour, based on experience

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Engage the customer in a friendly manner, share product information, and assist in locating products throughout the store. Seek opportunities to exceed customer expectations and enhance the customer experience.
  • Guide the work of others, ensure staff complete daily opening/closing checklists, plan and assign work to ensure quality standards are met, train staff, and oversee their productivity as directed by management.
  • Ensure each department follows cash handling, register, and return procedures.
  • Process returns per policy and assist cashiers with complex returns.
  • Make notes of any unusual transactions for management.
  • Perform all functions of opening or closing the store, including counting the safe, preparing drawers, pulling daily reports, performing loans, cash drops, and exchanges. Maintain cashier bank per department policy, monitor cash flow.
  • Maintain awareness of current ads, promotions, holidays, and events.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with products throughout the store, with a willingness to continue learning.
  • Notify management of any situations relating to customer service, safety, productivity, security, or any other situation that may adversely affect the store.
  • Ring up and bag customer purchases, perform carry‑outs.
  • Coordinate front‑end coverage; run line chart, ensuring that all front‑end staff receive breaks and lunches. Ensure consistent service levels and call for backup as needed.
  • Assist with ordering duties assigned by management, including placing orders, breaking down loads, ensuring items are properly faced with proper sales tags, and notifying management if tags are needed or if an item needs to be entered into the system.
  • Train new hires and retrain established staff to meet corporate standards.
  • Handle damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and rotation of all areas, products, and supplies.
  • Resolve issues of items not scanning properly, input items into POS, or notify management of complex issues with products, print labels, pull items for credits.
  • Assist with financial duties, including scanning and organizing invoices.
  • Work to be cross‑trained in all departments to be able to step in for call‑outs.
  • Maintain accountability while the GM or AGM is not in the store, respond to customer and employee issues, and work diligently to protect the store and ensure the store runs effectively. If an issue does arise, MOD should follow established procedures and report all issues to management or ownership.
