Overview
Job Summary Our Security Guard, also known as our Health Safety Ambassador (HSA) at UCSF Health, plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, welcoming, and secure environment across all UCSF Medical Center facilities. As a frontline representative of the Security Services team, the HSA supports the protection of patients, staff, visitors, and physical assets through proactive patrol, access control, safety surveillance, and timely response to incidents.
This position includes specific POST responsibilities, customer-focused engagement, and participation in events or special assignments that require professional security presence and public interaction. The role may involve physically intervening in escalated situations and applying approved physical restraint techniques in accordance with hospital and UCPD policies and safety protocols.
The final salary and offer components are subject to UC policy and internal equity considerations. The hourly range for this position is $31.15 to $41.92, with the entry point for new hires set at $31.15. Department DescriptionThe University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at University and contract locations. UCSF includes the Parnassus campus, Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Langley Porter Institute, and related campuses. The department has achieved accreditation from CALEA and IACLEA and emphasizes community policing and customer service ratings.
Required Qualifications- High school diploma or GED.
- One or more years of experience in customer service, security, public safety or law enforcement.
- Knowledge of standard security protocols and emergency response procedures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to engage respectfully with diverse populations, including those with physical or mental health needs.
- Basic computer skills for incident reporting, including email and access control systems.
- Prevention/De-escalation training to be completed within six months of hire.
- Ability to work various shifts and days of the week onsite in San Francisco.
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field.
- Two or more years of experience in a healthcare or institutional security environment.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Valid California Guard Card issued by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).
- Valid California Driver’s License (CDL).
