Position: 8205-Institutional Police Sergeant

INSTITUTIONAL POLICE SERGEANT, City College of San Francisco (8205)

Department: Police Safety Department

Location: City College of San Francisco, Ocean Campus and other centers.

Salary Range: $53.69–$65.26/hour; $111,680–$135,748/annually.

Appointment Type: Classified – Provisional, Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded from the competitive Civil Service examination process and eligible for a permanent civil service appointment through a future exam.

Responsibilities
  • Acts as Emergency Operations Manager in the absence of the Institutional Police Lieutenant and Chief of College Police, maintaining safety and implementing emergency procedures.
  • Administers first aid to students, staff, and visitors (e.g., CPR, lacerations) to provide immediate medical care and/or contact additional assistance.
  • Arrests individuals engaged in illegal activities, including theft, drug possession, and vandalism, to prevent further illegal activities.
  • Assists community law‑enforcement personnel, supporting them during their work activities on campus.
  • Collaborates with community agencies (law‑enforcement, courts, health care, social services) to address individual cases and take required action regarding investigations, criminal activities, and vandalism.
  • Communicates with students, staff, and visitors about safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to ensure understanding of information and potential consequences of violations.
  • Enforces college policies such as student ticketing and disciplinary issues, implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct.
  • Escorts students and visitors to ensure direction, safety, and site security.
  • Initiates necessary disciplinary action to ensure effective Police Department operations.
  • Investigates potential campus crimes and student‑related community incidents, resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, or referring to outside agencies.
  • Monitors campus activity and student behavior during regular and special events, ensuring compliance with established guidelines and maintaining a safe learning environment.
  • Oversees department activities and day‑to‑day operations, reviewing officer reports, vehicle maintenance, day watch officers, and daily line‑ups.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, and other activities to gather information required for job functions.
  • Patrols college facilities, providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activity.
  • Performs inspections to ensure accurate processes and operations.
  • Prepares a variety of documents—incident reports, activity logs, memos, letters, procedures, citations—to document activities and convey information.
  • Presents information in settings such as classrooms, trainings, staff orientations to inform individuals of campus security guidelines and law‑enforcement procedures.
  • Provides institutional processes such as traffic and parking control, inventory, and equipment operation to maintain efficient traffic flow and equipment usage.
  • Recommends improvements to department procedures and policies to enhance Police Department services.
  • Reports safety issues or concerns to the maintenance department to maintain a safe environment free of hazards.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding campus security issues, providing information, direction, and solutions.
  • Responds to situations such as accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, and alarms, taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and security concerns.
  • Schedules work hours and assignments to ensure adequate staffing for regular operations and special events.
  • Testifies in court proceedings regarding traffic citations, vehicle accidents, burglaries, and other relevant matters.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
