Airfield Safety Officer – Airside Operations

City and County of San Francisco – San Francisco, CA. Temporary‑Exempt (TEX) appointment for up to three (3) years. Compensation: $114,114 – $138,684.

Job Summary

The Airfield Safety Officer conducts patrols, inspections, and investigations to enforce the Airport Security Program and ensure compliance with Federal, Airport, and Transportation Security regulations. The role requires monitoring airfield operations, responding to incidents, and providing training and safety support.

Key Responsibilities

Inspect and evaluate airfield facilities—including runways, taxiways, lighting, signage, and security assets—for safety and security regulation compliance.

Control access to and safety of airfield facilities by closing/reopening runways, taxiways, ramps, gates, and security assets as needed.

Monitor and direct movement of vehicles, persons, and equipment; provide escort and safety support for safe and efficient operations.

Notify aeronautical users of airfield condition changes and manage communication via radios.

Verify compliance with aircraft parking space assignments to maximize utilization.

Enforce airport regulations and issue citations for violations; record citations in the appropriate database.

Respond to security breaches, violations, and emergencies; act as first responder, administer first aid, and maintain mobile command post.

Investigate incidents and accidents, identify contributing factors, and recommend corrective actions.

Manage placement and storage of materials; coordinate removal of ground handling equipment; participate in safety risk assessments and compile hazard data into Safety Management System reports.

Prepare detailed reports on safety/security incidents, injuries, and accidents; attend briefings and share information.

Conduct wildlife surveys and implement wildlife management and eradication duties.

Develop and deliver training programs, standard operating procedures, and other related training for airline tenants, service companies, or other users.

Monitor and coordinate maintenance and construction work sites to ensure safety and security.

Perform additional duties associated with the 9213 classification.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years of safety and/or security operations experience at an airport, airbase, airline, or military base, including at least six (6) months of recent airfield operations experience.
Valid California Class C driver’s license prior to employment.
Valid TSA security clearance and Customs Access Seal.
Successful completion of a medical examination confirming the ability to perform essential functions.

Experience Substitution

Associate’s degree in Aviation Management or related field substitutes for one (1) year of required experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management or related field substitutes for two (2) years of required experience.
Completion of a six (6) month Airside Operations Training Program substitutes for the required six (6) months of recent airfield operations experience.

Desirable Qualifications

In‑depth knowledge of CFR Part 139, Part 77, and FAA Advisory Circulars 150 series.
Working knowledge of CFR Part 1542.
Expert-level aviation phraseology and public safety communications, including two‑way radio operation with FAA Air Traffic Control and dispatch.
First‑responder experience on an airfield.
Knowledge of FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS).
Pilot’s certificate.
Experience at commercial, domestic, regional, or international airports.
Excellent oral and written communication and report‑writing skills.
AAAE Airport Certified Employee – Operations or ACE Security.
