- Prepping and fusing single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables for inside and outside plant construction.
- Performing fiber panel audits and splice case audits; placing mid-sheath splices.
- Testing and troubleshooting fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope.
- Installation and testing of fiber cross connects.
- Collaborating with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design to perform splicing as directed.
- Providing detailed reports of field splicing activity to the Fiber Design team.
- Ensuring work adheres to quality control guidelines and applicable regulations (OSHA, FCC, NESC, NEC) and procedures in manuals and handbooks.
- Cleaning, maintaining, stocking, and securing equipment.
- Maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic with minimal supervision.
- Participating in engineering, permit and construction processes.
- Constructing proper splice cases (pressurized and non-pressurized), using various cables including grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
- Making precise recommendations for changes in running fiber optic cables and providing input into construction methodologies.
- Assisting in scheduling splicing jobs with Construction Managers and/or Fiber Design; assisting in training for Fiber Splicer I-II.
- Coordinating with Construction Manager to prepare required Wimps with the NOC for maintenance splicing, and coordinating with Fiber Design on parts and equipment.
- Working flexible hours and on-call rotations which may include nights and weekends.
- Other duties as assigned. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
- 5+ years of splicing experience with the ability to properly place a mid-sheath splice.
- Proficient with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; adherence to local and federal regulations and company policies.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and organize effectively.
- Basic computer skills and understanding of Outlook, Excel, Word and Google Suite (Docs, Drive and Mail) and Smartsheets.
- Ability to perform prep and fusion of ribbon fiber and single mode.
- Intermediate understanding of proper safety construction practices.
- Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends, on-call rotation, and interact effectively with team members.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment without supervision; ability to drive company vehicles safely; valid driver’s license and auto insurance with satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to live within 30 miles (or maximum 1-hour commute during regular commuting hours) from the assigned territory. Territory definitions can be altered by management.
- Ability to carry, climb and operate an extension ladder (approx. 28 ft, 75 pounds); lift up to 100 pounds.
