Piledriver Engine Operator (9331) – Port of San Francisco (161272)
This position is responsible for operating and maintaining barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes that support pile driving operations. The operator may work independently or as part of a piledriving crew and performs duties related to the repair and construction of piers, wharves, and related substructures, including driving piles, laying stringers, decking, framing timbers, and demolition of damaged structural members.

Duties of the Piledriver Engine Operator include:
- Safely operates and maintains barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes that support piledriving operations; drives forklifts, Port vehicles, and small boats.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of cranes and piledriving equipment.
- Fuels cranes.
- Conducts pre- and post-operational checks of the entire crane system.
- Participates in the inspection and certification of cranes and auxiliary equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required of Class 9331 Piledriver Engine Operator.
Nature of the Work
:
May require working under adverse weather conditions, working on weekends and long hours outside regular scheduled shifts.
Experience
:
Three (3) years certified crane operator experience on barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes used for piledriving.
- License and Certification
: - Valid California Class B commercial driver’s license (presented at time of employment). Applicants must be insurable under the Port’s liability insurance; insurability must be maintained throughout employment.
- National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) certificates for the following designations as required by CalOSHA:
- LBT – Lattice Boom Truck Cranes
- LBC – Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes
- TSS – Small Telescopic Boom Cranes (less than 17.5 ton)
- TLL – Large Telescopic Boom Cranes (more than 17.5 ton)
The position requires a TWIC card; the incumbent must submit an application for, successfully acquire, and maintain a TWIC card. Applicants must undergo background checks per Civil Service Rule 110.9.1.
Desirable Qualifications (Ideal Candidate)- Experience operating cranes in marine construction environments.
- Strong working knowledge of safety protocols and regulatory compliance.
- Proficiency operating and working around heavy pile-driving equipment, including cranes, vibratory and impact hammers, leads, winches, and related marine construction machinery.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs on cranes and auxiliary equipment.
- Demonstrated situational awareness in high-risk work environments, with the ability to follow established safety protocols and chain of command during pile driving and marine construction operations.
