Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Fire & Life Safety Systems Supervisor, the Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for Campus Fire Alarm Systems installations, programming, operation, maintenance, inspection, testing, Fireworks monitoring networks, other system connections, and inventory. The incumbent inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure all work performed complies with applicable codes.

    Installs/Maintains campus fire alarm systems

    Objective:
    To ensure that existing campus fire alarm systems and devices are installed, operational and maintained in compliance with applicable codes.

    Incumbent tests, installs, programs, maintains, and repairs campus fire alarm systems and devices; performs disconnections, relocations, and reconnections of fire alarm system devices and equipment on construction and alteration projects; inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure that work performed complies with applicable codes; and performs tie-ins of new fire alarm systems devices. Incumbent will also obtain and remain current on all training and certifications required by the manufactures to service systems hardware and software.

    Assists contractors and staff associated with testing and installation of fire and life safety systems

    Objective:
    To ensure proper installation and testing techniques are employed by assigned personnel (whether in-house or contracted labor is used).

    The incumbent will meet with test or installation personnel and assist as directed by the Manager of Fire and Security Systems. Incumbent will be present at various times on the job-site to ensure proper procedures are being followed.

    Reviews new construction and remodeling of fire and life safety system design and installation

    Objective:
    To ensure that proposed and new construction of fire and life safety systems and associated devices are compatible with existing campus fire and safety systems.

    The incumbent provides campus fire and life safety systems technical information on system functions, specifications, and the results of on-site evaluations and surveys to design consultants and contractors who design and/or install fire and life safety systems and associated devices on campus; and reviews systems drawings and specifications for new construction to ensure compatibility with existing campus fire and security systems.

    Maintains equipment inventory

    Objective:
    To ensure that required equipment and spare parts are in stock for replacement as necessary.

    The incumbent maintains an inventory of all fire and life safety equipment and spare parts; and orders parts needed to maintain replacement stock.

    Maintains fire and life safety system and operational records

    Objective:
    To provide accurate, timely records of fire and life safety system operations, maintenance, technical and installation data.

    The incumbent maintains fire and life safety system operations and maintenance manuals, instructions, drawings, and technical data; prepares operational and maintenance logs and reports; and performs related administrative tasks.

    The incumbent will be required to be available as necessary for "on-call" status as directed by the Supervisor/Superintendent systems.

Required
  • Two years of formal fire alarm systems technician experience with Edward EST-3 Fire Alarm systems, installation & programming and Fireworks stations.
