Tiello has partnered with a rapidly growing commercial mechanical contractor specializing in mission-critical HVAC systems across data centers, technology campuses, healthcare facilities, industrial plants, and complex commercial buildings. As the company continues to expand its Northern California service operations, they are seeking an experienced Commercial HVAC Service Manager to lead a highly skilled service team while driving operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and long-term growth.

Position OverviewThe Commercial HVAC Service Manager will oversee all aspects of the Bay Area service department, including field operations, technician development, customer relationships, financial performance, recruiting, and safety. This individual will provide both technical and operational leadership while ensuring exceptional service delivery across preventive maintenance, emergency service, equipment startups, repairs, and complex mechanical projects.
The ideal candidate combines deep commercial HVAC expertise with strong leadership skills and a passion for developing people and growing a world-class service organization.
Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership- Lead the daily operations of the commercial HVAC service department
- Oversee preventative maintenance, demand service, emergency response, startup, and repair activities
- Coordinate technician scheduling, manpower planning, and resource allocation to maximize efficiency and customer satisfaction
- Support major equipment startups, shutdowns, and critical facility outages
- Provide advanced technical support for complex field troubleshooting
Provide leadership and support for servicing:
- Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers
- Centrifugal, screw, and magnetic bearing chillers
- Air handling units (AHUs)
- Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
- Hydronic systems
- Chilled water and condenser water plants
- Cooling towers
- Pumps and pumping systems
- Packaged rooftop units (RTUs)
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Controls integration
- Mission-critical HVAC systems
- Recruit, hire, mentor, and retain top HVAC service technicians
- Conduct field ride-alongs, performance evaluations, and coaching
- Develop technician training and apprenticeship programs
- Foster a culture centered around accountability, professionalism, safety, and continuous improvement
- Build and maintain long-term customer relationships
- Participate in customer meetings and project planning
- Support development of service agreements and long-term maintenance partnerships
- Resolve escalated customer concerns professionally and efficiently
- Partner with sales teams to identify retrofit and service growth opportunities
- Manage departmental profitability and operational performance
- Monitor labor utilization, technician productivity, overtime, gross margin, and revenue forecasting
- Review job costing and labor reporting
- Support pricing strategies for repairs, service agreements, and projects
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the service organization
- Ensure OSHA compliance and adherence to company safety standards
- Conduct safety meetings, field audits, and customer-specific compliance reviews
- 10+ years of commercial HVAC service experience
- 5+ years of leadership or service management experience
- Extensive experience servicing complex commercial mechanical systems
- Strong troubleshooting background with large-tonnage HVAC equipment
- Deep understanding of hydronic systems, chilled water plants, and central plant operations
- Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and controls integration
- Proven success recruiting, mentoring, and developing service technicians
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Valid California Driver's License
- Experience supporting data centers, healthcare, or other mission-critical facilities
- Factory certifications with OEMs such as Trane, Carrier, Daikin, York, Smardt, Mitsubishi, or Johnson Controls
- Startup and commissioning experience
- Familiarity with BACnet, Modbus, and Niagara control platforms
- OSHA 30 Certification
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, Construction Management, or a related field
