Summary

The work of a Sign Painter at Goldan Gate NRA includes designing, fabricating, and installing pedestrian and vehicle way finding signs, traffic signs, regulatory and safety signs, visitor information signs, and interpretative panels. These positions may be filled for a period, up to 1560 hours, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:
November 2026. Open to the first 30 applicants.

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:
Assists with all aspects of designed, fabricating, and installing pedestrian and vehicle way finding signs, traffic signs, regulatory and safety signs, visitor information signs and interpretative panels. Assist with evaluations of sign needs in the fields and in the formulation of sign plans Fabricate, maintain, restore, repair and replace historic and non-historic signs that include rustic log, wood and aluminum sign substrates.

Fabrication of letter routing and engraving templates. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot computer output devices that include vinyl plotter, printer, and CNC router. Maintain, repair and construct concrete and stone sign bases, pedestals and guard-walls. Performs and leads carpentry work at a high level of competency, often taking on the most complicated phases of project work assigned to the crew, and occasionally leads lower graded workers, volunteers, and interns in these tasks.

Transports tools, materials, employees, vehicles, and equipment with variety of vehicles weighing under 26,000 GVW to job sites. Physical Effort:
Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in fabricating and installing signs. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent carries objects weighing - 40 to 60 lbs, frequently hikes up to 8 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, signs and digging tools. The incumbent may spend up to nine hours a day digging holes and installing signs and posts.

Working Conditions:

This work is performed indoors and outdoors on high, narrow, steep, and congested trails at elevations that rise approximately 1000 to 2000 feet in above sea level This work is also performed in urban areas of high pedestrian and traffic congestion. It is performed in all types of weather and involves exposure to extreme heat, dampness, wind, dust, and noise. Sign installation involves the use of ladders and lifts which will expose the incumbent to heights sometime requiring fall protection.

This job will also require the incumbent to work occasionally around and near Poison Oak and in areas where stinging insects and ticks may be a hazard. Government housing may be available.

You may be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You may also be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training, obtain and maintain a government credit card with travel and purchase authority.

This is a bargaining unit position represented by LIUNA Local 1276. You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles.
