Shop Carpenter - San Francisco Playhouse

Salary: $27/hour
Job Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Schedule: 40 hours per week. Mon-Fri, plus some 40-hr work weeks will include Saturdays and /or Sundays at load-in and strike. Possible overtime will be discussed if needed but is not mandatory.
Work Location: Primary location is in Hayward, CA with occasional work in San Francisco, CA
Position Overview: Founded in 2003 as a non-profit organization, San Francisco Playhouse is the Bay Area’s premiere mid
- sized theatre company. We are looking for a dynamic and detail-oriented Carpenter to build, repair, and maintain theatrical sets, props, and stage elements that bring our productions to life, ensuring both artistic vision and structural integrity are met. This job entails collaborating closely with designers and production staff, interpreting technical drawings, selecting and preparing materials, constructing and assembling scenic elements, and ensuring all pieces meet safety standards and production timelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Be able to read Ground plans, elevations, and build drawings
- Assist in sourcing and purchasing materials for main stage Productions
- Construction of scenic elements for main stage productions independently and as a team.
Including but not limited to :
o General and finish carpentry
Use of Table saw, chop saw, pneumatic staplers, sanders, drills
o Metal cutting and grinding, welding and steel fabrication
o Scenic or base painting where required
o Theatrical rigging
Sewing soft goods, drop repairs and alterations
Electrical wirings and special effects - Assist with load-in and note schedules in the theatre
+Maintain main stage productions over the course of the performance runs - Maintain the backstage area of the theater
- Assist with the disposal of unwanted props and set pieces
- Assist in the cleaning and organization of the prop and costume storage alcoves
- Assist in keeping the scene shop clean during and after production builds
- Assist in the transportation of tools and scenic element between scene shop and theater
- Assist with the installation of San Francisco Playhouse Sandbox shows where schedule permits
- Help maintain the highest level of job safety
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 40lbs, be comfortable on a ladder, familiar with the safe
operation of hand and power tools, able to stand for long periods of time and able to travel via stairs.
These are preferred skills that are useful, but not necessary as a carpenter
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting ground plans, elevations, and build drawings.
- Strong skills in general and finish carpentry, including safe operation of table saws, chop saws,
pneumatic staplers, sanders, and drills. - Experience with metal cutting, grinding, welding, and steel fabrication.
- Familiarity with scenic or base painting techniques.
- Knowledge of theatrical rigging practices and safety protocols.
- Basic sewing skills for soft goods, drop repairs, and alterations (preferred).
- Understanding of basic electrical wiring and special effects setup (preferred).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining work spaces, backstage areas,
and storage. - Commitment to following and promoting safe work practices.
