Under general supervision, the essential functions of an Ornamental Iron Worker include: performing skilled work in connection with the fabricating, installing, dismantling, maintaining and repairing of structural members, steel rolling doors, chain link fences, fire escapes, drop ladders, hand rails, guard rails, ornamental iron gates and other metal structures; and other job-related duties as required. Some incumbents may exercise work direction over subordinate personnel assisting or engaging in such work.
The nature of the work requires the ability and physical stamina to: climb and work from ladders and extension ladders at varying heights up to 220 ft; work on scaffolds and off mechanical high-lifts; stoop and crawl into confined spaces; operate equipment; pass a medical qualification examination for the use of respirators and wear face-fitting respiratory protection; use hand and power tools;
use arc welding equipment such as Oxy/Acetylene, MIG and TIG; and lift and carry 50 lbs. Work may be performed under inclement weather conditions and in potentially hazardous environments under controlled conditions.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
1. Installs and repairs steel rolling doors; removes and replaces damaged steel slats, guides and rolling door operating gear.
2. Fabricates new parts.
3. Installs and repairs chain link fences and gates; may prepare labor and material cost estimates for such work.
4. Installs and services steel and aluminum sash.
5. Install and services fire escapes; inspects drop ladders.
6. Fabricates and installs, or repairs if damaged, hand rails, guard rails and play equipment.
7. Fabricates and installs ornamental iron gates, fences and window grills.
8. Fabricates and installs rebar.
9. Arc welds, acetylene welds and mig welds.
10. Maintains shop equipment; orders and maintains records of materials and supplies.
11. Drives city vehicles to transport personnel, tools, equipment and supplies to changing job sites and/or perform duties of the job. Some vehicles may require Class B driver's license.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
1. Current Category 16, 17, or 18 Exempt Employee in Class 7395 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in class 7395;
2. Successful completion of a recognized Iron Worker Apprenticeship Program of 3 years and 3 years verifiable journey-level experience as an ornamental iron worker;
OR
3. A combination of 8 years verifiable training/experience as an ornamental iron worker, of which 3 years must be journey-level;
AND
4. Possession of valid California driver's license (to be presented at time of appointment). Applicants selected for employment must be insurable and maintain insurability under the department's automobile liability insurance policy.
Some positions may require a valid California Class B driver's license, welding certification and/or experience installing/maintaining steel rolling doors.
