The mission of San Francisco Suicide Prevention (SFSP) is to provide emotional support, education, assistance, and intervention as necessary to all persons in crisis and those impacted by them, with the goal of reducing suicides and self‑destructive behaviors. SFSP has 5 hotlines, 3 local text hotlines, and is also the call center for 988 (the National Lifeline) and 988 Chat and Text California.
Job DescriptionOn‑Call Program associate (Overnight) – San Francisco Suicide Prevention, Adult Division.
Provide Crisis Counseling to City and County of San Francisco residents and provide coverage on all 8 SFSP’s 24‑hour 365‑day/year Crisis and Suicide Prevention Hotlines. Provide same Crisis Counseling for National 988 Crisis and Suicide Prevention Hotline including California 988 Text and Chat.
Specific Responsibilities- Respond to overnight chats, texts, or calls on all 8 different lines on the SFSP Hotline and 988.
- Assess for suicidal risks, assess caller’s needs and determine a plan of action.
- Provide emotional support in a non‑judgmental manner.
- Empower callers to look at options and make their own decisions.
- Provide information and referrals to callers when appropriate, provide crisis intervention and emergency services as needed.
- Provide BHAL Line Intake and referral support if working BHAL Line.
- Contribute to a positive work environment and culture by showing respect to co‑workers and engaging in positive team dynamics by concentrating on work duties and engaging in pro‑agency work culture.
- Record client contacts database and communicate concerns to Supervisors.
- Enter participant information by inputting alphabetic and numeric data in system.
- Maintain data entry requirements by following data program techniques and procedures.
- Keep files and data secured to protect participant confidentiality within HIPAA guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with legal/ethical and confidentiality standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Hotline Supervisor and Hotline Manager.
- Must successfully complete SFSP Crisis Line Volunteer training program or equivalent prior experience.
- AA in Social Work, Psychology or related area, or similar education or training in suicide prevention / mental health.
- Must have demonstrated successful performance and experience on the Crisis Lines.
- Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and with others.
- Attention to detail.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations.

- This position is union‑represented by SEIU Local 1021 and is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
