Responsibilities- Supervise the care, custody, safety, and welfare of youth detained at Juvenile Hall.
- Direct and guide youth through daily schedules, including wake‑up, meals, hygiene, unit cleanup, and scheduled movement throughout the facility.
- Maintain consistent close and active supervision to prevent incidents and ensure the safety of both youth and staff.
- Implement behavior‑management strategies to reinforce positive youth development and consult with supervisors as needed.
- Maintain routine and emergency headcounts of all detained youth and conduct required state‑mandated security checks of rooms.
- Monitor visiting sessions to ensure safety and security of youth and staff.
- Administer emergency first aid, respond to critical incidents, and use approved physical intervention techniques when necessary.
- Perform pat searches and room inspections to identify and confiscate contraband.
- Complete incident reports, behavior reports, individual case reports, and other departmental forms; maintain contemporaneous notes in the unit logbook.
- Maintain and update electronic databases and case management systems.
- Conduct ongoing individual and group counseling sessions with trauma‑informed techniques; listen and respond to questions, concerns, complaints, and requests; assist in problem‑solving to help young people.
- Collaborate with Deputy Probation Officers to track a youth’s behavioral progress and rehabilitation goals.
- Direct leisure time activities; teach and encourage good sportsmanship.
- Transport residents to and from various locations; direct and control residents’ movements to ensure safety and security.
- Facilitate the admission and release process of detained youth.
- Confere with departmental personnel and representatives of outside agencies.
- Meet State‑mandated training requirements (Standards for Training in Corrections). Required 40 hours on‑site training during the first week; >200 hours of instruction in the first year; 24 hours annually of STC training.
- Respond to emergency conditions and physically control and restrain hostile youth.
- Vision and hearing must be sufficient to perform duties.
- Perform considerable amounts of standing, walking, and running; lift or move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more with assistance.
- Work day, swing, and graveyard shifts, including holidays and weekends.
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Valid CPR certification.
- Substitution:
Experience as a counselor in a juvenile detention facility or similar program may substitute for up to two (2) years of the education requirement on a year‑for‑year basis (one (1) year equals thirty (30) semester units or forty‑five (45) quarter units).
