Hours:

Hourly regular full time; 35–40 hours per week (Tues–Sat with evenings off); on-call overnights 3–4 nights per week; requires complimentary housing at student residence.

Job Purpose:

Under the supervision of the Manager of Residential Life, the Residential Life Assistant assists with planning and implementation of student life programming, supervision of students, chaperoning field trips, with the safety, health, and wellness of students and staff as the priority.

Responsibilities
  • Serves “in‑loco parentis” for students living in the facility and responds to any emergency (fire, medical, earthquake, etc.).
  • Reinforces residents’ compliance with fire, safety, security and curfew guidelines and procedures.
  • Triages all urgent matters involving the students and residence and communicates with parents.
  • Supervises minor students to scheduled, urgent, and emergency doctor’s appointments in consultation with School administration.
  • Cultivates, coordinates, and assists in the development of student leadership and responsibility through programming and direct involvement with students.
  • Oversees and ensures student timely participation in housekeeping assignments, events, activities, bed‑check, and curfew.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and events focused on high‑quality, safe and age‑appropriate activities in coordination with the Manager of Residential Life.
  • Educates students to be supportive community members who are responsible for their actions and behavior toward each other and toward the community in which they live.
  • Communicates with students regarding the rationale behind policies and procedures, emphasizing the educational value of the standards to which students are held.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with students through individual contacts, meetings, and discussions.
  • Coordinates implementation of roommate agreement and community agreement process.
  • Applies fair and consistent disciplinary standards for all dormitory students and refers major disciplinary offenses to the Manager of Residence Life or Manager, Student Services.
  • Manages some facility systems in coordination with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music facilities team; conducts room assignments, badge issuance, maintenance and usage of office space, common room, kitchen, storage areas, laundry room, room check, etc.
  • Facilitates schedule for Residential Staff with direction from the Manager of Residential Life.
  • Assumes “on‑call” responsibility on a scheduled basis.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
  • Variable work schedule as required, including responding to nights and weekend duty calls as needed.
  • Requires overnight duty 3–4 nights per week as per schedule.
  • Supervises night and weekend programming, events, activities.
  • Employment subject to a successful Live Scan background check and fingerprinting.
Qualifications

Education Level and Focus

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, performing arts, or humanities preferred.

Experience

  • 1–3 years of previous experience working with adolescents, preferably as an RA in a college or other dormitory.

  • Communicates with others (both orally and in writing) in a manner that ensures clear and mutual understanding of information.
