Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Member of Program Staff

The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a leading research and advocacy organization focused on mitigating societal-scale risks from AI. We address AI’s toughest challenges through technical research, field‑building initiatives, and policy engagement, along with our sister organization, Center for AI Safety Action Fund.

To achieve our mission, we run a large number of programs dedicated to maximizing our positive impact. Some of our past achievements include: releasing the most‑used measure of AI capabilities used by all major AI companies, running a large compute cluster to facilitate AI safety research which has been cited over 16,000 times, and publishing a global statement on AI Risk signed by Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio and top AI CEOs.

We're looking for dynamic operators to own and execute programs across public engagement, operations, publications, special projects, and research. Example projects include partnering with the team behind #Team Trees to run a campaign on AGI, supporting researchers in building benchmarks for deception and weaponization risk, standing up an AI safety hub in DC, or finding ways to engage You Tubers and long‑form creators on AI safety.

CAIS is a fast‑moving, meritocratic organization. Responsibilities and leadership grow with those who show initiative and consistently deliver.

Key Functions & Responsibilities
  • Scope new projects end‑to‑end—defining goals, success metrics, and constraints through interviews, landscape analysis, and rapid research.
  • Build detailed project plans with clear objectives, deliverables, timelines, and budgets.
  • Own day‑to‑day execution, keeping projects on scope, on time, and on budget.
  • Be highly creative and agentic in achieving your goals: find the path forward even when one isn’t obvious.
  • Stay agile when priorities shift: re‑scoping, re‑prioritizing, and adjusting timelines without losing momentum.
  • Monitor risks and obstacles; elevate critical issues early with recommended solutions.
  • Coordinate across researchers, vendors, and external partners to secure the inputs and approvals needed to keep work moving.
Required Knowledge and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (public policy, international relations, computer science, or similar); an advanced degree is a plus but not required.
  • 4–8 years in startups, business operations, program/project management, consulting, or a closely related area.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Proven ability to scope and understand new subject areas quickly.
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating project feasibility, impact, and risk.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; able to present complex ideas clearly to diverse technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple work streams, deadlines, and stakeholder communications simultaneously.
  • Self‑motivated and comfortable working independently to drive projects forward.
  • Proficiency with project‑management platforms, spreadsheets, and basic financial/budget tracking.
  • Strong interest in AI safety, emerging technologies, and mitigating catastrophic risks.

$150,000 - $250,000 a year

Benefits
  • Health insurance for you and your dependents
  • 401K plan + 4% matching
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Lunch and dinner at the office
  • Annual Professional Development Stipend
