Software Engineer
Location:
San Francisco | Stage:
Seed ($6.8M raised) | Equity: 0.25 to 0.75% ownership The problem and the product
Shift‑based work forces run the world. Hospitals, restaurants, clinics, hospitals, anywhere that lives and dies by who shows up and when. The software managing all of that is an embarrassment. It relies on spreadsheets, group texts, fax machines, and enterprise tools that managers have given up on. We’re burning it down.
Shift
OS is an AI‑native workforce coordination platform built for organizations that can’t afford to get staffing wrong. At its core is Holly, an AI worker that generates schedules and automates the manual orchestration that makes shift management painless.
Call‑off at 6am? Holly finds coverage, reaches out, confirms the swap, and updates the schedule. The manager sees it after the fact. She tracks licenses, keeps people compliant, updates payroll—all the tedious work that bogs people down from their real jobs.
We built Shift Rx first (1,000+ pharmacies, 12,000+ clinicians) to prove the model, then launched Shift
OS and Holly. We’ve raised $6.8M, have real customers on both products, and are onboarding a new enterprise customer each month. Demand is growing, so we’re hiring to keep pace.
We’re in San Francisco, near Jackson Square. We need engineers who want to own meaningful equity and a direct line to the founders. Architecture decisions that ship immediately. If you want a job, this isn’t it. If you want to build something meaningful at an early stage, come talk to us.
Who you are building withThe engineering team is small, mighty, and a little unhinged. We take our work seriously but don’t take ourselves seriously. Daily we debug complex workflows, drop AI‑generated memes, roast each other, and laugh. When it’s time to ship we lock in and deliver.
Because we’re small we rely heavily on each other. Extensive experience across the team means we provide guidance, pair‑program, or just a sounding board you’re never alone.
What your week looks likeDays vary. You’ll make Holly feel like a real coworker, build seamless workflows, and rethink how people manage work forces. You’ll touch the entire codebase—from UI to backend.
Each day you’ll design agentic workflows so Holly can handle scheduling end‑to‑end like a teammate. And while your surface area is wide, the problems are genuinely interesting.
You’ll own infrastructure decisions and evolve our cloud groundwork (AWS, Terraform, CI/CD). You’ll build agentic systems and optimization layers that make Holly a real coworker for ops teams.
You’ll talk directly to customers, letting feedback shape priorities.
How we operateWe ship fast with discipline. Autonomy is paired with consent: you own end‑to‑end projects, but we collaborate out loud and challenge each other to make better decisions.
We skip theaterful stand‑ups, keep PRs moving, and pair when helpful. We ship daily and discuss customers weekly.
Who you are- 4 to 8 years of building and scaling SaaS products—enterprise or startup, we care about what you shipped.
- Full‑stack fluency:
React/Next.js/Type Script on the frontend and Type Script and Postgre
SQL on the backend. You jump between layers without permission. - Infrastructure comfort: AWS, Terraform, Postgre
SQL, and containerization. You’ve operated in production, not just tutorials. - AI curiosity: LLMs, optimization libraries, or a genuine itch to dive deep—bring the engineering instinct.
- Builder mentality:
Ambiguity fuels you. When requirements are fuzzy you clarify and start building rather than waiting for the perfect spec.
Experience with scaling systems, security best practices, LLM engineering, memory and context management for AI agents, or building products in healthcare.
CompensationEquity: 0.25 – 0.75%
Benefits:
Medical, Dental & Vision coverage. Company pays 75%
Unlimited PTO
This is early‑stage equity with real upside. At our current trajectory it is not a lottery ticket; it is a bet on a winning team.
Why now, why usMost early‑engineer roles are at companies still figuring out what to build. We already have proven products and customers. The funding and demand let us move fast. We need engineers who want to build something massive on the ground floor.
You will have the equity to bring real value, visibility to grow into technical leadership, and the chance to build core infrastructure for an industry that lacks good software. Workforce infrastructure is months behind—we’re building the replacement. Come build it with us.
