Staff Software Engineer – Full‑Stack About the Role
Care Journey is the team responsible for designing and continuously improving a timely, inclusive, and intuitive adaptive care experience, one that guides each member to the right blend of preventative, scalable, and 1:1 support as their needs evolve, driving sustainable engagement and better outcomes for members and a predictable, cost‑efficient care mix for our customers. This includes owning new and future work in our onboarding, assessments, care recommendations domains and our various 1:1 and self‑paced care offerings, collectively the core of Modern Health's adaptive care model.
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer who can operate with high ownership across the full stack: someone we can trust to work cross‑functionally with product and design, translate ambiguous problems into clear technical plans (tech specs/RFCs), and then execute against that plan, both individually and in close collaboration with other engineers. You'll be expected to have (or quickly build) deep familiarity with our tech stack so you can move fast without first‑derivative learning curves slowing down the team.
We expect an engineer at this level to be ramped up and owning critical parts of roadmap development within 30 days of onboarding.
This position is not eligible to be performed in Hawaii.
What You'll Do / Requirements- Truly full stack product development with a slight lean towards the backend

- Implement web and mobile user experiences using React & React Native
- Engineer efficient and reusable systems that drive complex web and mobile applications
- Maintain HIPAA and GDPR compliance and general security through best practice implementation
- Independently write and execute technical plans (tech specs/RFCs) for large, ambiguous, cross‑domain projects, negotiating scope with product along the way
- Lead ambiguous or large projects, working collaboratively with design, product, cross‑functional partners, and other engineers to deliver a cohesive adaptive care experience
- Serve as the directly responsible individual from engineering on roadmap commitments, owning launch timelines, decomposing work, and coordinating dependencies across teams
- Write and maintain technical documentation, unit tests, and integration tests
- Be a thought leader in strategic engineering and tech initiatives, and contribute to cross‑team engineering forums
- Lead and contribute to cross‑team engineering forums and on cross‑team engineering projects
- Mentor other engineers to scale your impact both on Care Journey and across the engineering department
- Provide compassionate and impactful reviews of technical project plans and code
- Participate in on‑call, driving investigation, remediation, and process improvements from recurring issues
- Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must be able to maintain work authorization for the duration of employment without employer sponsorship or employer‑provided training plans or attestations (including, for example, the Form I‑983 required for STEM OPT).

- Deep familiarity with our tech stack (or a directly comparable one) strongly preferred; expect to start meaningfully contributing within your first 30 days
- Demonstrated high ownership: you independently decompose very ambiguous problems into component parts, propose technically elegant strategies, and can estimate and deliver against them with confidence
- A track record of writing technical plans (tech specs/RFCs) that hold up under cross‑functional scrutiny, and driving solutioning for initiatives that span multiple domains or teams
