On-site Compensation: $100,000–$175,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications

About the role

A venture-backed hardware startup in San Francisco is developing high-performance power conversion systems. With a new product coming to market, the company is seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer to own its software—from control loops running on microcontrollers to the test infrastructure used to validate the hardware.

This is low-level firmware operating under strict memory and timing constraints. The engineer will develop embedded software in Rust, work directly with high-frequency switching hardware and debug problems using oscilloscopes and laboratory equipment as often as software debuggers.

The ideal candidate learns quickly, takes ownership and works persistently through challenging software and hardware problems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded firmware in Rust for resource-constrained microcontrollers
  • Design, implement and validate high-frequency power electronics control loops
  • Develop real-time software with strict memory and timing requirements
  • Write and maintain low-level drivers and hardware interfaces
  • Bring up firmware on newly developed power electronics hardware
  • Integrate embedded software with hardware validation and automated test systems
  • Debug interactions between firmware, electronics and switching hardware
  • Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers and other laboratory equipment
  • Develop software for manufacturing test fixtures and production-line equipment
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, test and manufacturing engineers
  • Support the product from initial prototype through production
  • Create clear software documentation and test procedures

Required qualifications

  • Experience programming in Rust through professional work, internships, research, coursework or personal projects
  • Understanding of embedded firmware fundamentals
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers and resource-constrained systems
  • Understanding of interrupts, memory management, peripherals and real-time behavior
  • Ability to debug problems across software and hardware
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly
  • Ownership, curiosity and resilience

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with embedded Rust or  Rust
  • Experience programming in C or C++
  • Familiarity with ARM Cortex-M or similar microcontrollers
  • Experience with SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, PWM, ADC or DMA
  • Knowledge of control systems, digital signal processing or power electronics
  • Experience implementing real-time control loops
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and hardware debuggers
