TEX As-Needed - Truck Driver
Under general supervision, the Truck Driver drives and operates various types of motor vehicles for the pickup and delivery of library materials, mails, equipment, and (including unloading and loading) of library materials, mail, equipment and supplies to and from the Main Library, Support Services Center, 750 Brannan Street, 1455 Market Street, Branch Library Locations, and other designated locations as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Arranges outgoing and incoming bins in the truck for pickup and delivery;
- Places delivery bins in designated drop off spaces as directed by location;
- Utilizes and understands the San Francisco Public Library color coded bin system;
- Ensures that loads are properly and safely secured;
- Cleans and does light maintenance on vehicles and equipment by checking oil, tires and fluid levels, and changes fuses;
- Communicates with supervisors regarding route delivery for information and safety;
- Prepares in writing a variety of reports such as daily reports which list driving activity, accident reports, maintenance reports; and
- Performs DOT (Department of Transportation) and CHP (CA Highway Patrol) inspections and completes appropriate forms.
- Maintains and records statistical data on the number of bins, items, and articles delivered and collected.
Working Conditions:
Work requires bending and stretching to lift loaded and empty bins of various library materials and equipment with the use of a hand truck. Employee should possess basic knowledge of operation and care of light trucks and various vehicles, and also safe work practices to protect the safety of oneself and others. Employee should have the willingness and ability to work with limited direct supervision.
Schedule flexibility is required, including availability to work on an as-needed basis to support operational needs.
About the Truck Driver On-call Pool:
The Public Library's as-needed truck driver pool will be a group or pool of on-call truck drivers who will temporarily fill in throughout the department's citywide facilities in cases of vacation, illness, and other leaves.
Minimum Qualifications:

Verification of qualifying experience, when requested, must be documented on the employer's business letterhead and must include the name of the applicant, job title(s), dates of employment, description of job duties performed, and signature of the employer or the employer's authorized representative. Experience claimed in self-employment will only be accepted if supported by documents verifying income, earnings, business license and experience comparable to minimum qualifications above.
Copies of income tax papers or other documents listing occupation and total earnings must be submitted. Employees of the City and County of San Francisco may submit performance evaluations showing duties performed to verify qualifying City experience. City employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee's class will be allowed only if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules.
Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. The applicant must submit a signed statement explaining why verification cannot be obtained. Waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to provide the required verification, or request for waiver when requested may result in rejection of the application.
