Our client is a well-established, growing commercial general contractor in the South Bay. They build life science, ground-up commercial and industrial, tenant improvement, and seismic/structural projects. The leadership team fosters a collaborative workplace built on open communication, teamwork, and creative problem-solving.
The OpportunityThe Controller will oversee all aspects of the company's accounting and finance functions and lead a small accounting team. The role reports directly to the CFO.
Key Responsibilities- Payroll:
Oversee timecards, payroll processing, workers' comp, 401(k), quarterly and year-end reporting, new employee setup, and new-year setup (processed through an outside payroll provider) - Accounts Payable:
Oversee check processing, lien releases, 1099 filing, new vendor setup, and credit card payments and management (GCPay is used to automate sub pay apps, lien releases, and COIs) - Accounts Receivable:
Manage billing packages, outstanding invoice tracking, bank deposits, AR follow-up, and monthly close and reporting - Banking & Cash:
Perform daily and monthly reconciliations and manage cash flow - Financials:
Own year-end close, WIP reporting, job costing, backlog analysis, adjusting journal entries, and account reviews; coordinate with the outside CPA firm on tax filings and payments - Insurance:
Manage company renewals, COIs, year-end audits, workers' comp, general liability, and insurance compliance for the company and its subcontractors
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or MBA a plus
- 5+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry
- Strong working knowledge of WIP reporting, job costing, and backlog analysis
- Experience leading and mentoring an accounting team
- Legal, risk/insurance, and banking experience desired
- Sage 100 Contractor and GCPay experience a plus
- Advanced MS Office skills, especially Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
- Highly organized, able to work independently, and consistently meets deadlines
- Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record
