Department Summary
Created in 1968 and commenced in 1969, the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department (CCS) at San Jose State University educates and serves students through interdisciplinary education based on principles of social justice. CCS curriculum prepares students to critically examine and address intellectual traditions and contemporary issues resulting from political, historical, economic, and cultural constructs of race, class, and gender, and as they manifest in Chicanx and US Latinx communities.
CCS at SJSU is the oldest Graduate Program in Chicana/o Studies in the United States and one of only five Graduate Programs in Chicana/o Studies in California, and the only one north of Santa Barbara, California.
The CCS Department offers undergraduate major and minor degrees, as well as its historic master's degree. The CCS Department serves the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and SJSU by offering required numerous General Education classes, including those of American Institutions, Public Speaking, and Ethnic Studies.
The CCS Department's temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The fall term of the academic year begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May.
