Position: Assistant Professor - Public History / History of Science and Technology
The Department of History at San José State University seeks an Assistant Professor of Public History, with a preferred specialization in the history of modern Science & Technology, who will partner with local community organizations and institutions to provide learning collaborations for undergraduate and graduate students. Key responsibilities include teaching the Introduction to Public History course, creating and overseeing a Public History internships program, and teaching upper-division courses in the candidate's subfield(s) of expertise, in addition to possibly teaching History methods and writing courses in rotation and occasional lower-division surveys.

The new hire will also offer occasional graduate courses in their field of expertise as part of the department's MA programs in U.S. and World history. The successful candidate will contribute to the department and its interdisciplinary partners to establish a Public History program. Santa Clara Valley, the birthplace of Silicon Valley, has a strong network of community organizations dedicated to local history and a rich tradition of innovation in science and technology.

Required Qualifications

* Ph.D. in History is required.

* Research specialty in Public History with a preferred emphasis on the modern History of Science and Technology.

* Demonstrated record of successful teaching in diverse classrooms.

* Demonstration of research potential and an established agenda for future research.

* Applicants must demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

* Strong record of teaching excellence, teaching experience, and a record of service.

* Record of successful collaboration with community-based organizations.

* Demonstrated commitment to or experience in acquiring external funds.

* Experience or interest in developing curriculum related to public history and history of technology.

Key Responsibilities

* Teaching assignments will include undergraduate, occasional graduate courses, and possibly some student advising.

* Create and oversee a Public History internships program requiring outreach and close partnerships with local museums, libraries, archives, and historical societies.

* Chair the board of the Sourisseau Academy for State and Local History

* Faculty are expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the advancement of the discipline, through peer-reviewed scholarship and professional activities.
