Position Description

The Department of Aviation and Technology at San Jose State University is pleased to announce a search for a tenure-track faculty position in Aviation at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in Professional Flight or Aircraft Systems. The incumbent will be required to teach courses in private pilot ground, instrument flight, commercial pilot ground, aviation meteorology, aircraft multi‑engine, and courses in aircraft systems, flight controls, flight operations, avionics, turbines, power plant, as well as courses in general aviation areas such as air traffic management and aviation management.

In addition, the incumbent is expected to carry out sponsored research and guide student research projects.

The Department is the oldest in the College of Engineering and is the fastest growing department, attracting students at both freshman and transfer levels. With an enrollment of over 900 students, the department maintains a strong relationship with local industry through continuous support of its Industry Advisory Boards and offers a robust internship program. Full‑time faculty are active researchers and are successful in attracting major funding from industry.

The BS degree program in Aviation has four options:
Professional Flight, Airline Operations, Aviation Management, and Maintenance Management. Our Aviation Program is ranked #1 on the West Coast and #4 nationally. The BS degree in Technology offers concentrations in Computer Network System Management and Manufacturing Systems, preparing students for the demands of industry in areas such as Smart Manufacturing, Industry 4.0, IIoT, and data analytics.

Required Qualifications
  • A Doctorate degree in Aviation/Aeronautics or aviation‑related field, or a Master's degree in the same area with significant industry experience and/or proven ability to carry research projects.
  • Faculty in the Aviation Program are expected to have expertise in the subject matter of the classes or labs they teach.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to: (a) teaching and working with a diverse student population; (b) curricular innovation; (c) laboratory development; (d) development of externally funded research; and (e) publication of research in peer‑reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and strong research expertise in aircraft systems design, flight controls, flight operations, avionics, flight training, and student education research.
  • Valid FAA Flight Certificates and significant experience with FAA regulations.
  • Extensive industry and/or academic research and teaching experience relevant to the aviation field.
